Stranded Need Help

I have a 1999 Adventurer Model WKG34V with the ISB 5.9 Cummings that lost the Serpentine Belt. I called Freightliner and they called Cummings after giving them the ser# and was told the belt number is Cummings Part number 3289257
Well I can not get this belt on.
When I move the Tensioner it just won't fit. The Tensioner is the type that is groved and puts the tension from the inside out and not from the outside of the belt inwards.

Please help!!!!!
Do I have the right Belt?????
Am I doing something wrong????
we are on the side of the road for the night.

Also does anyone know the Dodge part #. We have a Dodge Dealer around the corner but they said the Cummings part # is no good

I had that happen to me, not only was belt broken, but the bearings on the belt tensioner was bad. Check that too. I think that was ruined my belt.

I think it takes a 3/8 socker and a lot of muscle to put the tension where it needs to be. I think it had to move 8" or about 75-90 degrees.

It took me 4 days to get the right parts. Cummins gave me the wrong numbers. I don't know if I hve the numbers anymore.

That is the correct number, as I have the extra belt with me.

So you problem is the belt tensioner has to be rotated into the tension almost 90 deg. It took me along time to figure it out. I wanted to route the belt the wrong way.

If you belong to FMCA look for a "mechanic's helper" close to you. They volunteer to help out in situtation such as yours.

"Mechanic's Helper" This is indicated by a large solid dot preceding the name of the member offering this service. Members whose names are preceded by this symbol are available to advise FMCAers whose motorhomes have broken down on the road as to where in that area you can obtain good, knowledgeable motorhome service. In other words, if your motorhome breaks down, help from a fellow FMCA member who is familiar with the mechanical service in his area is only a phone call away.

There should be a sepentine belt path diagram at least in your owners manual of the engine. FOr the rest of us we should carry an extra belt and take a digital photo of how it is routed on the motor. If you do not have a side radiator it will nearly be inpossible to get a good photo and putting on the new belt will require two people.

Thanks Guys. It 8am and we are in Virginia Just off I-495 at Exit 46 behind Tyson Ford on some side street.I just got off the phone with Cummines and they tell me its the right belt. I going under to try again.
Iam also going to check my FMCA Member book.

Too bad I am on a trip because I live a few miles from your location. I managed to change my serpentine belt myself on my Cummins 5.9 and no part of it was easy. The biggest hurdle was getting the belt over the fan (rear radiator) and getting it over the tensioner had very little slack to spare. I used a breaker bar and it took all my strength to move the tensioner enough to barely get the belt on. If you don't have a breaker bar or the equivalent you may not be moving the tensioner enough. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

On further thought and looking up my records, I used a Cummins part number 3289213 on my 2000 ISB, rear radiator. There was a long thread on rv.net forum on this a couple of years ago and lots was said about getting the belt over the fan. The originator of the thread found a slightly longer belt at NAPA as I recall. On the identical engine the Cummins part number worked well for me but there was very little slack to spare. I note that this is a different part number that posted. If you try everything and it doesn't work the only solution is to find a slightly longer belt.

On the Road again.
I called a Road Service and he came out and had it on in 10 mins. It will go on two ways. I was looping it the wrong way. I was doing it how the book shows and its wrong.
I did call an FMCA member and he was at work and his wife was real nice.
I took lots of pics.
