The owner of a 2023 Vista 29V reported a rotten egg smell only from the bathroom faucet, while the kitchen sink water did not smell, despite using and refilling the fresh tank regularly while full-timing. Multiple members suggested sanitizing the fresh water system with bleach, running treated water through all taps, letting it sit, then flushing, with one member also suggesting a new kitchen sink filter afterward.

Members noted that the kitchen sink may have its own cold-water filter...

I have a 2023 Vista 29V, the water from the bathroom tap has a rotten egg smell, the water from the kitchen sink does not smell. I have been living full time in the RV for the last 6 months, I dump the waste tanks every 7 to 9 days and fill the fresh water tank at the same time. Any ideas as to why the smell and what I can do to get rid of the it?

  1. Treat your fresh water supply with a ¼ cup of bleach for every 15 gallons of capacity. Let it sit for four hours, drain, and refill. Do this at least every six months.
  2. Empty both the Grey and the Black tanks at least once-per-week. Add ¾ of a cup of Borax to both the Grey and the Black tanks, and prime each with a few gallons of water.

Some details may lead to what the problem might be. what is the water source? Reliable treated water that has a chlorine residual in it? What is the situation on how often you move and might change water sources?
And then is there any chance that it is actually both or all faucets as they pull from the same tank? The rotten egg smell I think of is often caused by bacteria that feed on the iron content in some wells and those old wells that were assumed to just have "bad water" can be treated to kill the bacteria in the well that causes the bad smell. But that should mean that water pulled from the same holding tank should have the same smell at all faucets, so something to question. If it is from the hot water, more than cold, I might suggest checking the water heater sacrificial anode to make sure it is not worn past use! Some heaters have them, others not, so don't panic if not finding one on your brand! I expect to find them where the drain plug is on other brands.
But also if there is good chlorine content left in the water, that water passing through any pipes should clear bacteria to a level below what we would smell.
The rotten egg smell is more common in rural areas with higher iron content in the ground. Not often found in city or commercial sources which are well run/monitored!

In many (most) Winnebago motorhomes there is a water filter under the kitchen sink that filters only the cold water at that sink. Perhaps that’s why it smells in the bathroom sink and not the kitchen sink???

Fresh tank needs sanitized, as mentioned above add bleach, run all taps until you smell bleach, let it sit 6-8 hours then flush out. It will eliminate the problem. Get a new filter for the kitchen sink after.

Look under the bathroom sink for a pipe that has a valve in it. Sometimes that valve is broken and needs to be replaced.

If only the hot water smells bad, flush the heater tank and replace the anode rod.
