Each year I travel from SE and enter NY from NJ T'pike or even as far west as I-84. I go here & there in NY then to Maine. I know how to avoid the Taconic State Parkway when going to Rhinebeck area, but I've had nightmare scenarios many times. Last year I would THINK I'd avoided and then NOT. I called state police twice, and patrol cars came, very nice, yet in BOTH CASES the way they told me to go ended up leading me to yet another prohibited road. Maybe I'm dumb haha (I'm not - yet do have my strengths and weaknesses!) Anyway, how do NY RV travelers get this worked out? Any EASY TIPS? Folks have said RV Life GPS can do this - but it doesn't. I called them last Fall and confirmed it doesn't. Neither does Google or Apple maps. I had a Garmin RV GPS years ago and hated it. I doubt it does either. Any help would be appreciated before I take off this summer. Thanks!! [24' 2018 Winnebago 22M]

I just purchased a new Garmin 53 with traffic, and it now has "Custom Avoidances," so you can now program those into the GPS. With that said, what kind of roads are prohibited parkways? Is that something related to the width and height of the 22M and not having enough clearance?

Huh, safe routes are supposed to be most of RVLife's Right To Existence.

Thanks Eagle5. Many, likely most, NY Parkways DO have low clearance, some are very low, however there are some that don't, so vehicle height settings will not keep vehicles from being routed to Parkways that DO have clearance, even though RV's and trucks are still restricted. Your response led me to do some research re the Garmin 53 (and I'm guessing with any other GPS device with vehicle settings) and found all that is needed is to set the vehicle's gross weight to 3.5 tons (7000 lbs) or higher. Easy, as most RV's are certainly more. It also says that using Custom Avoidances to accomplish Parkway avoidance would be a "time-consuming process" as you'd have to manually select each Parkway to avoid. This is very helpful! Thank you. I haven't owned a dedicated RV GPS since that earlier Garmin and I never thought about weight settings being the 'key' - I only knew height settings wouldn't avoid all the Parkways. Again, thank you!

Yep Pointyears, that's what folks told me - MAYBE it's been modified since last Fall when I called them. Yet now, thanks to Eagle5, I believe I've found my 'fix' in simply using a GPS with the WEIGHT setting (not using height for this purpose.). I'm going to experiment.
