I have been lurking on this site for a few months and this is my first post.

We are considering selling our home and becoming full-timers and we need some help with what others do for a “permanent address.” Last year we spent 4 months traveling about the Southern states and set up a process for having our mail transferred. But you are required to have a “permanent address” for such things as your drivers license, motorhome and car licenses, and so forth. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Search for “RV full time domicile“ on Google. You’ll find hundreds of links on the subject. Most folks choose a state with no income tax, cheap vehicle registrations, etc.

South Dakota, Texas, Florida are popular states. Others may have no income tax but have high registration costs, like Wyoming.

Just a thank you to all who posted on this subject. Wife and I will be selling our Florida residence very soon and will be moving to Virginia. We'll probably keep our Florida residency now that we have options.

I used the irv2 link and learned a lot more! That tip about the Last Will and Testomony was very helpful since we plan to buy a home in Virginia and want to will it to our kids. We have a Florida Will but as stated it won't be useful in Virginia. Interesting to say the least.

Virginia allows TOD (Transfer on Death) for real estate. This bypasses probate and transfers the asset immediately upon death, avoiding the probate delay. You can do this with your financial accounts as well. I recommend you use a real estate lawyer to file this form with the county, it's inexpensive to do this, maybe an hour of time.
