We bought our Adventurer and Bronco new when we retired in June of 2022. We have spent the last 2-1/2 years exploring these two great countries and have decided to pull into port for a while in the Palm Springs area.
Our goal was to see as many National Parks as possible and look for our new community and home.
This has been some of the most amazing, transformational, relationship building, and terrifying times of our lives. Freedom is uncertainty! Uncertainty can be scary!
I posted previously on our first year, and wanted to share a bit of information on the last year. Plus, we're probably going to sell the rig and I might not be on here that much, if at all, so I wanted to share the rest of our story, say goodbye, and thanks to all who have helped us along the way.
We headed out from Central PA in October last year for The Great Adventure Part 2.
Here are a few highlights:
Through central VA over to the coast via Richmond and down trough Virginia Beach. What I remember most about VA are barking dogs and gunfire! Celebrated our anniversary at the VA Museum of Fine Art in Richmond - nice little restaurant there. Also, the Aquarium and Aviation Museum in VA Beach are really nice. Think we stayed in Luray and Surf City, too though the latter might have been NC.
Took a ferry from the tip of the peninsula over to NC near E City. Remember visiting back in the late 80's when my brother was flying C-130's out of there.
Put your rig on a ferry - it's really cool! -and a little terrifying!
Think NC was just Myrtle. Off season so not too bad. Reminds me of Pigeon Forge at the beach.
From there we traveled down the coast to St. Augustine with stops in Charleston and Hilton Head with a visit to Savannah. Fell in love with Collards at a place called Saltwater Cowboys I think. Best I have had yet.
The aircraft carrier is cool. Can't remember much else that stands out right now, other than traveling the Sunday after Thanksgiving in driving rain.
Make sure you know when the holidays are when you are booking 6 months in advance.
The fort in St. Augustine was neat, and some real characters have settled there. Seems to be all about the drinking - just like Key West.
Then over to Orlando to visit Phyllis' sister and see her mom one last time.
Traffic - ugh! Margaritaville is a trip.
Finally on to Ft Myers to see Phyllis' BFF from here childhood. Still recovering from the previous hurricane there.
Here is what I want to say - there is still humidity and mosquitos during the winter in FL and all along the gulf - we'll get to that later! Had some nice sites and reasonable weather other than multiple Tornado warnings in Ft Myers, but the mossies would chase you in in a blink!
I'll pick this up later on our tip down the Overseas Highway on to Key West for Christmas...
Peace and Safe Travels!

Hi Scott & Phyllis Brown and Ben,
Well certainly, you were living the dream! I can understand selling a large motorhome when you will not be full-timing in it. Another thought would be to get a small Class C or a Class B for short 1-week-or-less trips.
Palm Springs sounds nice.
Thank you for your reports,
Eagle5
Palm Springs

Thanks Eagle...not sure what's next and any decision to sell the rig is going to be very emotional. He has taken such good care of us! The transition to coming back on the grid is massive as well.

Well, at this point, you have seen it all. Perhaps more than most, you now know what area you like the best.
How many weeks have you spent in Palm Springs? Are the folks there nice? It sounds like wonderful hiking areas, to be sure. I walk about 10 miles per day with Grace, but as an Arctic Dog, she would not like those summertime temperatures.

That is one handsome dog!

Some pics from last post...forgot a few significant stops. Shenandoah NP, VA Museum of Art, Military Aviation Museum. VA Beach Aquarium. Ferry ride, Myrtle, the Fighting Lady, Ft Sumter, Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine...

Christmas lights in Augustine, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, my first granddaughter, Margaritaville, Ft Myers...
Yes, America is stunning in its beauty and diversity with the most amazing people, particularly if you put your phone down and stop watching the news!

Ruby is a doll - Children's Children are the crown of old men.
Ben looks like a great dog.
That one campsite with the palm trees is serene.
I only use a flip-phone with no camera. I had my TV disconnected a few years ago. Yes, so much to see without being glued to a smart phone or the TV all day long.
Thanks, Eagle5

I really like that first video with the dogs, and the two music videos are classics!
I stumbled-across how to get the YouTube video to imbed in these posts. The shortcut URLs won't work for the embedded display:

  1. enter any text you wish to name the video, which will display on the top YouTube banner
  2. Let the video play in your browser; in my case I use both SeaMonkey and Firefox
  3. Grab that URL and link it to the text you entered

... and now, what place will you make your home?
Thanks, Eagle5

Route for the Adventure Part 2...we have a pretty nice process. I use mainly Google Maps and RV campground reviews to plot our course and select campgrounds, then Phyllis calls the campground and uses her magic to somehow nearly always get us on the best site they have...

Well, trying to summarize our travels now seems like an overwhelming task. However, I got two hours to wait for the Bronco to be serviced - the shuttle will be back in an hour 15! - so here we go...
I remember staying in Ft Myers due to 40 mph sustained winds in the keys. Never having driven the overseas highway before, figured discretion was the better part of Valor.
The highway is pretty cool. Not a challenge except for traffic on the land portion of the drive and expansion joints.
Largo really had a lot to offer - manatees, dolphins, Everglades NP, Tarpon, and the real African Queen, though don't think much is left from the original.
Favorite part of Largo was a swimming pool carved into the bay that was at a park Ben and I walked too every day. There were Tarpon every day, manatees on several, and dolphins once. Looking straight down and seeing a dolphin chase a fish for breakfast in crystal clear water is not something I'll soon forget. Ben swam with all of them!
We were actually south of Key West at a class A ownership place. Was OK. There was one site available for purchase at $3.8M - coach not included !
Sorry about the pics, can't figure out how to rotate them.
Christmas in Key West was special. Mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea. I've carried that Christmas Tree around for 2-1/2 years...
Amazing seafood and restaurant locations. Love us some grouper! Gator not so much! Best RV Park pool ever at Key Palms in Largo

Hi Scott & Phyllis,
Wonderful photos and memories. I always thought The African Queen was filmed in Africa, but I guess Florida makes more sense. The dorsal fin on that dolphin is so straight, it almost looks machined. Never seen a bird like that. It really is tropical down there, which is much better than the 36ºF and rain we have here now.
Thank you for sharing the photos and the story of your great adventure.
Eagle5

The African Queen was filmed in Africa - Uganda and Belgian Congo. The boat came to the US later. Ironically, Key Largo was filmed in Burbank. John Huston did things his way for sure. We watched African Queen after our ride on it. Amazing movie. Had never seen a Bogart film before!
Bird life in the Keys and around the Gulf is amazing. That guy is a Purple Gallinule in Everglades NP. Here is another cool one - an Anhinga. Will share some later from our trip around the gulf.
Thanks for your interest@

Peace and Safe Travels!
I'm about to take a 25 day 3,200 mile trip with my spouse of 45+ years. I'm concerned that after this trip we won't be celebrating 46+ years!

A thought to consider? When things get to be too much, try changing up the routine!
We had done lots of camping and a fair amount of travel by the time we got around to a newish motorhome that made travel a bit easier for some things but much harder for others.
We found it really great to see things for a while but when we got to some national battlefield back East and found neither of us wanted to get out and read the sign to find out what happened, we decide it was time to STOP being a tourist!
One of the ways we still found travel to fit us was having some purpose to the travel. We also wanted to reduce the constant days of travel and we wanted to get to know specific areas much better.
I've not checked on it in years but at the time, Workamper was a great thing for us. We traded a few hours of work for lots of time just getting to really know the place were had settled. You don't really know a place if you don't know the people there!

I've been out on the road since November 2023, I think we were in Palm Springs at the same time, I was there in early December 2024 (and 2023 for that matter). If looking to "dock the ship" I found the outskirts of Phoenix a nice place with everything you need close by. Its looking like I'll be going back to the stick and brick life, at least for a couple years. Sure learned a lot!
