Members shared detailed advice on installing a removable table between the front captains chairs of a 2017 Sunstar 35F. The original poster struggled to remove the engine cover (doghouse) to inspect the floor for drilling, prompting tips from others with similar RVs. Suggestions included searching for hidden screws (sometimes embedded in carpet), using an Allen wrench for a concealed fastener, and employing a magnet to locate metal latches. Reference was made to the Winnebago interactive... More...

We have decided to install a removable table between the two front captains chairs in our RV. I decided that I needed to remove the engine cover so I could get a look at the floor in the area where I plan to drill a hole for the table base, since the base will be flat with the floor. Unfortunately, I could not find any fasteners on the engine cover to remove it. So, how do you remove the engine cover on our RV?

I have seen these tables on other Sunstar models so I know it is doable. If you have one of these tables on an RV that is the same or similar to our Sunstar, please let me know the location of the center of the table in the floor. If it is an aftermarket table, let me know where you found it.

Thanks,
TD

Not sure about yours. Our doghouse (2008 Itasca Sunova 26P) is carpeted. Facing the front, there are two screws in the far right and far left corners and an allen wrench fastener in the nearest you on the top surface, slightly offset to the right. All are embedded in the carpet and hard to find, especially the allen wrench fastener. For that I have to just feel around to find it. Remove the front screws, turn the alle wrench 90 degrees to the left, and you should be able to lift it up. IF it is like our rig.

You can get some great info from the interactive p[arts catalog here:
For attachment of cover, it seems to show the Allen key:

At times I have found a magnet is great to find the metal of this latch??
But on the back side it seems to show there are just tabs on each side to fit into the front to hold it steady? Maybe just release the latch and pull back off the tabs?

No good info on the floor question!

I used to have a Thor ACE MH that I put a table between the two chairs. I found all of the necessary parts through marine stores not RV stores. The hardest part was finding the correct length of pole. I did however use a floor post holder that was not flat to the surface. I figured that even when parked that would not be an area that we would be walking in. We custom made that table, it was a great idea that worked well.

I would love to see pictures as you progress. Have thought of doing this in our rig, too.

My family got our start in converting a few different weird items like bread or beer wagons that we had to make fit what we wanted.
So a couple ideas to consider that may/may not fit?
For temp locations for tables, we first thought of having a mount on top of the floor but then that is a trip point when the table and leg are not in place. Instead of building UP, we found we could set the vertical part of the mount down into the floor and below if we looked/ tested carefully!
We found it made the table much more stable if we had a much wider "footprint" at the base, not just a small sleeve for the leg. We found we liked the trip factor much better if we used thinner but wider metal on top of the floor, rather than something higher with more trip hazard. We found a solid piece of 1/8 thick on top of the floor spread the pressure around and then if we had a sleeve welded into the plate, we could go down below floor farther to make the leg and table far more stable.
Bit of a trick to reach both top and bottom of the floor but a "sandwich" of plate on top, floor and then plate on the bottom, with it all bolts together made it far less trip hazard and worked well when we finally added the carpeting over the to plate.
We finally got around to making a round plug to fill the hole but it was not a big thing without the plug. The hole was not a problem to wall over but it seemed like every time we wanted to put the table leg in, there was already something hiding in the hole!
For the table surface, we had junked counter tops that we cut down and converted. Sometimes the part of the material that is cutout for sinks is left as scrap that is just about right for a small table?

, Well, we think alike - I used a magnet to find the hex head opening in the end of the cover (then I read your post). Also as EverettO pointed out, there was one screw at the front of the cover on the driver's side. The screw on the passenger's side was missing, but I did find the hole. Thanks guys. As far as the floor base for the table, Amazon has two different styles. One is flush mounted to the floor with a receiver hole in it that goes thru the floor and the other is a flush mounted plate that the table leg screws into and locks in place. Once I verify from the underside that there is room for a 2.5" hole in the floor, I will proceed with this option. No room - option 2. In either case, the plate will be flat to eliminate the trip hazard.
Thanks for all the responses,
TD

Our 2020 Vista has the Removable table from The Factory. The attached Picture and Winnie Parts list Items 226 - 229. I'll try to post more information as I know there is an Actual 3rd party Manufacture of the Table post & in floor mounting. It's the same as used by boat Builders.

More Information on our existing table between front seats, The Mounting hardware is manufactured by the Springfield Marine Company. I looked them up a few years ago and at the time they were selling the parts online. 2nd picture with tape measure is placement Back from the Dog House (Not from edge of Dog House opening into engine bay. Hope this helps.
