House draining Chassis battery? 2007 Aspect 26A

Our mechanic tells us that our chassis engine battery is totally fine. But when we leave the rig sitting for about a month and a half, we often end up having to have to jump start. It jump starts no problem on the first try, so it's not like dead dead dead -- just depleted down.

(Please note that we do intend to run the thing more often when it's in storage, but as life does, life gets in the way and sometimes we can't get around to it as often as we'd like. We know that we should be better about this, so please, no rebukes about this.)

The question is: Are there things in the house part of the RV that can drain on the chassis engine battery? -- or do we think our mechanic is wrong and we should just get a new chassis engine battery?

Follow up question: If there are things in the house that drain on the chassis engine battery, does flipping the auxiliary battery disconnect switch off inside the house prevent this -- or does flipping that switch only prevent house things from pulling on the house batteries?

The house batteries do not drain the motor start battery when in storage, whether the auxiliary switch is <on> or is <off>.
A stuck relay in your chassis wiring can cause a drain. You could do some tests with a multimeter in the current draw mode or with an induction amp meter. Start unplugging relays one-by-one if you have a relay causing a drain.
Lead-acid batteries have always been recommended for recharging at least on a monthly basis. This maintenance charger works well for me:

I also soldered this end onto my charger so that I can back-charge the motor start battery through a dash-mounted 12 VDC power port:

I think we can be pretty sure that mech is not an RV owner! He is missing the basics on this!
This is a part of the RV wiring that is critical when we need to understand what it does as it is doing lots of things.
One of the big things it does it connect the coach and chassis battery together at times or disconnect them at other times.

Looking at the parts I marked red, that is the chassis battery coming in to the mode solenoid. Solenoid is just a different name for relay or switch?
Chassis on one big lug and coach (green) on the other big lug. Blue lines are the control battery and ground that make this set of contacts close when we want them connected together at two different times/situations.

If we camp and run the coach batteries down a bit, this contact gets battery power on Wire LR when we start the RV engine. That battery makes the coil in the solenoid pull the contacts together as we drive and that lets the engine alternator put some charge in both the chassis and coach batteries! GOOD!
But if we find we have a weak chassis battery and the coach are still okay, we don't have to get out the jumper cables as we can use a dash switch for a "jump start"!
When we hold that dash switch battery is also put on LR! That pulls this solenoid and connects the two together for the jump start! GOOD!

If the RV is in a quiet spot, try the switch sometime? You may be able to hear the solenoid thump as it closes? With all the engine noise, we usually can't hear it as the engine starts. But if the coach batteries are charging as we drive, this is where it gets the power from the engine alternator!

Note that the coach battery (green) comes in on right and then goes to the coach battery disconnect? But that doesn't get involved with the chassis side unless the engine is running to connect them. That disconnect only disconnects some of the coach items, nothing on the chassis is involved there!

But see wire KKG on the left side of the solenoid? That is where the chassis side gets connected to the battery to feed power to lots of the chassis fuses. Just a convenient place to make the connection, I assume but if we want the chassis to work, we need this connected!

What the shop is missing is that we have to treat RV that we don't use often, different from we do our daily driver!
There are things on the coach and chassis batteries which stay connected, even if we open the coach disconnect! Safety items stay connected on coach. On the chassis there are things like door locks, ignition and radio presets which stay hot while we store.

It works the same on our cars and if we store the car for a month, we may come back to a dead battery! One of the things folks found when they started working from home and not driving to the office every day was batteries went dead!

The shop is not used to dealing with cars that are stored for a month or so!
Different ways to go to avoid the trouble. There used to be a Trik-L product but that business went out when the owner died. It was a cheap handy automatic thing to let a little power from the coach go to the chassis if we plugged the RV in when stored. No longer available but there are reports of a different brand but I have no info on that.

If we have AC power handy, we can plug the RV in as well as put a charger on the chassis battery? Kind of a pain and more junk in the way!

I have a place to plug RV when storing and have a different way to get charge from coach to chassis that fits me better than a standalone charger.
Somewhat crude and possible headache if I mess it up but simple?
When I drive home, both batteries will be a t near the same charge as they have been connected during the drive. The ony power needed to move from the coach to the chassis is the small amount to avoid the small drains like the radio running it down.
That is important as it lets me use a small gauge jumper form one battery to the other.
I don't need a big jumper cable because the current is really low!
On my last RV the coach and chassis battery were next to each other, so a small jumper with alligator clips from one positive to the other got it done for me! Negative is already connected together at the ground buss bar.

If the mode solenoid is handy, a strap between the two big lugs will do the same.


But this has a hazard involved if we are not alert! IF you forget to take this strap off and for some reason run one battery down while camped, the start /chassis battery will also be dead and you WILL be stranded until you get a real jump start!

Bottom line is that it is normal for RV to go dead while stored if we don't do something to avoid it!

Guys that get shipped off to basic training can find their battery died while they were gone!

^This! Absolutely true.

I installed a knife switch on my chassis battery’s negative post and just use it to disconnect the chassis battery in storage.

I actually have Amp-L-Start installed that would keep my chassis battery charged in storage. But it would pull power from my House lithium battery and I’d rather not use that up in storage.

The steps and the gas detector are powered from the chassis battery!
 
To solve your question, put a charger on the chassis battery and get it fully charged. This could take a couple days. Then disconnect the negative cable. When you return in a month and a half put the negative cable back and if it starts up you know the battery is OK and you have parasitic loads, which are very common.

If you are visiting the RV every 6 weeks and jump starting it then running the engine for 30 or 45 min this is not enough to charge the battery and it is likely the battery is in a constant state of low charge meaning it won't last till the next visit and additionally a consistently low charge level will shorten it's life drastically.
 
Try a solar charger on that battery, or disconnect the negative.
^^ This. I put a tiny 4 watt solar charger on mine and it's stopped the MB app from yelling at me me every month that the battery is getting low. I just have it going to the Sprinter's jump terminals because the 12v accessory ports are off so the battery can't be reverse-charged through them. Since it's only 4w it can't overcharge the battery even though there's no charge controller.

One of the big points on battery care is how simple they seem! That means we often miss those small details of how we need to work the question and there is no one true answer to what is best as we each have different situations.
It's those details that can get us in trouble if we are not really into the question!
If we start the how often we use the RV, that is a big point that changes what we nee3d to do. If we drive the RV a fair amount of time weekly, we have a totally different need than the folks who may store the RV most of the time and may only go out for a week and maybe only 3-4 times a year.
Second big question is what we have in the storage situation?
If have power available, it may be best to set things to keep a charger on the coach AND the chassis batteries. Downside is that we then need to do a good amount of checking that we are watching what that full time charge may be doing to those batteries.
Many industries keep their valuable batteries on fill time charge systems. But those are far better chargers and they also have a group of people assigned to still check those batteries , often assigned to do a monthly check!
I did those battery checks for about ten years and I can vouch for it being a drag, even when paid to do it. That leaves me to fully understand why most of us don't get it done right in most cases! It's not fun!

But the downside is obvious when we look at reports of major trouble due to emergency equipment failing and look a why the batteries were bad! The St. Louis airport found out when they had a storm and the generator did not start!
The airport was shut down for several hours because the tests were being "papered" !
They showed the records on TV and the battery voltages were exactly the same for some 20 months of testing and that is just not going to happen if one actually test them!

The only true way to avoid potential battery trouble is to live, eat, and sleep with them!
Or accept that we are not likely to ever get it totally correct!
We just have to make it as good as we can or admit we missed a few points!
 
  1. Sorry, but 7½ watts part-time is not enough. That is only 5/8ths of an amp, and then only when sun is shining. If you are only going to charge for half of each day, you would want to have 2 amps, or about 24 watts.
  2. 48 watts.
 
An alternative is to add a battery disconnect to the house battery. On my previous RV I installed a simple blade disconnect to my chassis negative battery terminal and when I put the RV in storage I just lifted the blade to fully disconnect the chassis battery. That way it won’t lose its charge in storage. There are plenty of other battery disconnect options, the blade was just the easiest to use for me.IMG_0100.jpeg

I installed a Voltage Sensing Relay between the house batteries and the chassis battery, problem solved! (as long as the coach is plugged in)
