Exterior Oven Range Vent Question

All - we recently purchased a 2529rg travel trailer. It has an exterior range vent that I know should be open when cooking to help with air flow. However, I am not sure that I am opening it correctly because any time we cook the smoke detector goes off. There is a tab on the vent that I pulled down, but I am wondering if the vent also pulls out in any way? I am worried I am going to pull the vent completely off the trailer, but I feel like it should be opening more in some way. Any advise or suggestions are helpful. Thanks.

The oven vents I've seen on TTs (and motorhomes, too) all have flaps that open outward. On my past TTs it was a simple plastic finger that rotated against the vent to prevent it from opening. To open the vent you simply folded that small finger out of the way to permit the flap to fully open.

Now, that doesn't exactly sound like what you are describing. So, it may not apply at all.

Why not test it? Turn on the range vent and go outside and check for good air flow in various configurations. Make sure the filter in the range vent is passing air effectively, too. Turn on the vent and put a piece of paper up against it and see if the vacuum force holds the paper to the vent.

Thank you so much. I will play with it a bit more and will definitely do a couple tests as you suggested.
