A member’s 2002 Journey developed a steady discharge from the diesel/water separator after sitting for six weeks, continuing for about 15 minutes while the engine ran normally. Members suggested checking whether the liquid was water or diesel, including collecting a sample in a glass jar, and questioned whether the separator’s drain valve was operating properly.

After inspecting it more closely and researching the issue, the owner reported that a failed drain valve was causing the...

My 2002 Journey sat for about 6 weeks since returning from Oregon and Central Cal. Started it up today and it seems to be running fine but I getting a lot of discharge from the diesel/water separator. Still streaming after about 15 minutes of running. See pictures. It seems to be mostly water but seems like a lot? I'm in Las Vegas where it's typically pretty dry. I'm sure fuel from Oregon could have some water in it, but, does this seem normal? I've never seen this much discharge before. Is this something I need to have checked out? Thanks for the assistance!!

Well a finger test will tell you if its water. And if it is water, you either got a bunch somewhere or the dump system got hung up and just let go. Not familiar with your separator function. Someone with the same motor etc will be along and either say yay or nay.

Catch a sample in a glass jar. Let it sit for a few hours. Fuel and water will separate and become obvious.
If your fuel tank contained enough water to trickle out for 15 minutes, I doubt it would still be running.
When was that unit last replaced?

Thanks for the reply. The filter has been replaced but not the entire unit. I'll get it checked out.

Thanks for the reply. I do think it's mostly water.

Ok color me confused, I have a similar drain port on my fuel water separator, but I think I have to open the valve to dump the water and there is a sensor built in that lets me know if I need to do that.

It this something different?

Hi Tim, you are correct! Thanks for your reply. I looked a little closer at this today and after some more research I found that valve has gone bad and that is the cause of the leak. The good news for me is the valve can be replaced for about $40. Getting to it to change might be a bit of a challenge but that's my next adventure!
