Good morning, I was wondering what are some thoughts on diesel vs gas in a class A? Thanks.

What she said plus watch the way the discussion changes around various size and type of unit.

Generally speaking there is no diesel short option and no current gas long option in an A. The mid range has some overlap where you can pay a lot more for a small high end DP that will perform somewhat better than a gas chassis in the same size. Gas chassis's also are a variable in that some builders stuff more house on a shorter wheelbase to get a price point advantage. Good for price, not so good for the driver.

There are a bizillion gas vs. diesel discussions on iRV2.
Basically, you get more everything with a diesel.

... including more expensive repairs etc.

IMHO, it really depends on how many miles you plan to put on it. If you drive a few hundred (or thousand) miles once or twice a year, go gas. If you're always on the move, diesel. Still your maintenance costs will be more.

Regardless of travel, if you expect your total mileage during ownership to be under 250k, go gas.

but with more you get less.....less parking.. less camp spots... less repair facilitys..but more :thumb:

It was all about price for me. I wanted newer but couldn't find a diesel in my price range or layout. My wife and I found that the layout we wanted was more important than gas vs. diesel, but everyone is different. I have a gas with the layout we wanted, but it can be under powered and times. It does matter how much you are going to use the MH too. Is this your first MH? if so don't buy the biggest and the best. Its better to work your way up to this point and have a better ideal of what is best for you.

wonder if it would pull a boat:popcorn:

Rated to pull 5K, I have seen lots of them pulling Toads, Dollies, Trailers etc

I do not pull anything, but I would pull my Boat , if I wanted to take it somewhere, and, I do keep a pull bar in the storage bay-just in case I find that 5 Window Chevy Pickup I am looking for.

In my estimation, floor plan is much more important than engine power.

Floor plan is important all the time you are parked and some of the time when you are underway or in a rest stop. Engine choice and suspension is only important when you are underway.

While underway (or in a rest stop) can you get to the bathroom, have seating to eat lunch, access the refrigerator, etc.

While parked is there storage for your clothes and toys, is there room to get dressed ... does the bathroom have the amenities that you want ...

Modern gas engines pack plenty of power to take you anyplace that you want to go (they will be noisier when pulling up steep grades). The suspension of diesel pushers provide improved handling. The engine noise is away from you.

Good luck ... there are lots of units out there ... if you choose wisely you will have many years of enjoyment .

Depends on a few things. How large do you want 40'+ = diesel. What do you want to tow? 5K+ = diesel. If you stay below that, then gas is an option. For those two items, it doesn't matter how far you want to drive.

Thanks for all the quick responses. We actually purchased a 2015 Itasca Suncruiser, gas. We had a diesel for a short amount of time but the floor plan did not work for us so we traded it in. Now hubby is second guessing if we made the right decision. We plan on doing alot of local trips, can't go for long periods of time yet, still working. Again thanks!

Guess that proves the point about layout being more important than drive train. We too chose floor plan over power plant. You live in the coach not the engine.

Actually the Sprinter is rated 4200lbs - unless they just changed it rescently... The trailer hitch is rated at 5000lbs.

The View is also a C not an A. Fine if you want to be crammed into a short box. That is not what most folks are looking for in an A.
