Denver to Taos in early October Route Advice Sunova 33C

The quick way is I25 south to Walsenburg the west over La Vita, pass on 160 to Fort Garland then south 159 to Taos.

The scenic route is US 285 South to just past Villa Grove then Colo 17 South and than back on 285 to Tres Piedras then East on US 64 to Taos.

If there is snow, take the quick way.

I've not made that exact trip, but I've driven parts of it. I like US Hwy 285. I've been to Taos, but only from 1-25 and also up 160 only as far as Questa.

I drove up 285 from Santa Fe to Fairplay a few years ago and the road was good the entire way. Only issue I had was not being able to drag DW out of the Georgia O'Keeffe museum that morning, so it got dark on our way, then started raining hard. Lots of southbound traffic with blinding headlights made it the worst couple hours of driving in my life. But the road was great.

I have lived in Colorado for 60+ years and have had my RVs on all the routes suggested. I am not going to make a recommendation except to suggest the OP take a look at my Colorado mountain RV camping blog HERE. I recommend best routes; not-to-miss scenic and historic sights; free and low-cost camping sites; and great kayaking, whitewater rafting, and fishing rivers and lakes.

Also, consider riding the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad that week from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM. You will be treated to some of the most beautiful, golden aspen-covered mountainsides in the San Juan Mountains as the narrow-gauge train winds back-and-forth across the CO-NM border at elevations of 8-10,000'. Antonito is located on US 285 30 miles south of Alamosa. Alamosa is where US 285, US 160, and CO 17 intersect, so the routes mentioned above go through there. We will be camped just outside Antonito from Oct. 8-14 to ride the Galloping Goose railbus on the C&TS RR.

Totally agree about the Cumbrs & Toltec except consider doing it from Chama, NM. Very nice campground, Rio Chama RV Park, within walking distance of the railroad station and Chama is a nice little town to explore. There is an option to do the round trip on half of the route to Antonito, train both ways instead of doing a long bus ride.

We will be camped at the Twin Rivers Cabins and RV Park west of Antonito for our Oct. C&TS train ride. It is a Passport America member, so 1/2-price rates for our stay. We have also stayed in Chama for train rides.
