Good Day All,

I'm currently in the process of having cushions covers altered for my newly made 2106 dinette. In researching foam there are many levels and the option of adding Dacron Fiberfill.

I reached out the the Foam Factory for suggestions and received the following feedback as well as the option of adding the Dacron Fiber Fill.

HD-High Quality: This foam is a medium-firm and is considered the “middle road” foam. High Quality foams are fused with rubber to provide a nice “bouncy” feel and firm core. HD-High Quality has the support of a firm but the nice comfortable give of the Medium foam. This foam lasts 10-12 yrs with regular use.

Lux-High Quality: This is an Extra Firm foam. Lux-High Quality is our firmest foam we carry and is best for those who prefer to be sitting on top of their cushions with little to no give when in use. Like the HD-High Quality, this foam is fused with rubber so it does have a bit of “bounce” when in use with a very dense core center. This foam lasts 10-12 yrs with regular use.

Has anyone replaced their cushion foam and what route did you go?

Thanks,

Good afternoon Lyle.
We didnt like the foam that came with our 1708FB. For intermittent seating it was oh-kay but the wife and I regularly sit at the dinette and work when were out during the week. The factory foam always compressed to the point I felt like I was sitting on the bare wood bottom.
I didnt do as much research as I could have but stumbled on HD foam in Joann Fabricks while following my wife around. I could tell the difference in support just squeezing it at the store. I wound up replacing the current fill in our seat bottom cushions with their Airtex High Density Foam. It wasn't too difficult to stuff the new foam into the stock seat covers and I can tell a difference when sitting there for extended times. Although its a bit pricey I think it was worth it. Based on that I'll also replace the seat backs this winter as well.

When the truth matters, don't trust the salesman!
If I had doubts about the foam, I would NOT trust the names to mean much as they are "sales names" and mean very little. My wife worked in custom decor items like pillows for a while and there is a great deal of difference in the foam and what else you may wrap the foam in before the fabric/cover is added. It is often a combo of things for the really good stuff.
One way to gain more info and ideas of what might fit what you want, is to talk to folks who do the custom work. Many of them will have samples of what they sell. One way to see what seems to fit your body best is to actually set on it!
The sales folks I trust most are the ones who are willing to talk about as well as show what they are selling!
If you have some of the loose cushions, take a few in as you go and you can likely spot what feels best for what you want.
Not all our bodies fit the same seat!

Thanks Gunny, I looked up the Airtex High Density at Joann as you described. It has a 1.6 lb/cuft density with a 36ILD. This would be close to the Foam Factory's Regular Poly Foam

https://www.foambymail.com/product/poly-foam.html

This would be a little softer than the HD36 I mentioned earlier. Having said that what are your thoughts on the level of foam you used? Could you stand firmer, which the HD36 would be.

Thanks,

Lyle

Good Morning Lyle.
I could/should have done a bit more research. The Joann material was firmer, but for me I could have gone firmer and would have likely been even happier. I do see an improvement, but for what this material costs in hindsight I should have researched more for firmer. If I can get away with it, I may put the Joann material in to the back rest then look at the material you quoted for the bottom.

The Lux - HQ is considered Extra Firm with a ILD of 50. I'm sure the 2.8lb/cuft impacts that as well. But from what I've read, over 2.4lb/cuft puts the foam in a better quality range.

I wish I could find a 2.4 - 2.8 lb/cuft with a ILD of 44 to compare, but have yet to find it. I have found tons of 1.8 lb/cuft with a 44ILD.

One question I ask myself is, how would a cushion of 1.8 lbs/cuft @44 ILD compares to 2.8lbs/cuft @44 ILD in relation to defection (haven't found the last product).

I redid the cushions in our 2014 Minnie Winnie 25B. I bought this foam off Amazon: GoTo Foam 5" Height x 24" Width x 96" Length 43ILD (Firm) Upholstery Cushion Made in USA. It is perfect for us. Buy a little larger than your current cushions (ours were 4 inches) and cut it carefully. You can find videos on how to cut the foam. We have been very happy with it but you can select other degrees of firmness.

Cushion and Foam Replacements for Dinettes

Several years back, I converted our jacknife sofa to a 36" depth Dinette. I found that Repro had replacement seats in various fabrics. They also have sets in variious widths up to 44".
They are comfortable and have weathered well these past years.

36" is the smallest manufactured cushions out there. As I made the dinette slightly larger than the 2106FBS slide platform, custom covers were required.

I found some 2050 High Density foam at a local furniture manufacturer. The 2050, is more dense and higher quality than 1.8 and the 2050 is firm, but not too firm.

Picked up some outdoor fabric to make the color coordinated covers.

Used the old covers and foam, I picked up for free as test pieces and try out my sewing skills. Lol
