Just brought home our new 2006 36G Meridian with 300 Cummins getting ready to head south this week. During engine warm up, I set the cruise control to on, press the accelerator then hit the button to get the faster engine idle as the manufacturer suggests. After about 5 minutes idling with this setting the engine begins to surge in RPMS for no apparent reason. If I don't disengage the cruise it will keep climbing upwards slowly. Once the cruise is disengaged it idles fine. Anyone else have this problem. Thanks for your help.

Fun Time --

You may try a different operating mode to get a fast idle: turn cruise control on, and press 'resume/accelerate' to increase idle. Each press will increase RPM's. Takes a second or so to respond.

No need to press the accelerator to achieve high idle. Not sure if this may be causing your issue.

Thanks ever so much for your reply. I will try your suggestion tomorrow for sure and get back to everyone. Maybe that is the magic trick it needs. I never gave that a thought.

As I have a gasser and not diesel, I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I always thought that cruise control didn't work under a certain road speed.

On the diesel pushers the cruise control can be used to set a 'fast idle' while standing still. Nice feature for warming up your engine.

Thanks Don. Just when I thought I knew everything (at least that's what I tell my son) I go and learn something else!

Update on Cruise Control: Pusherman, I tried your thought today and still had the same result. Thanks anyway it sure made sense to me. Called Freightliner and was told this is not how it should work. So, will have it looked into. I am curious though, anyone else having this problem? Thanks

Mine is erratic at times as well. Let us know what you find out.
