Member Title: Socket for 2019 Winnebago Sunstar 29VE wheel covers?
Members are troubleshooting the correct socket size needed to remove the silver wheel covers (simulators) on a 2019 Sunstar 29VE dually. Members are troubleshooting the correct socket size needed to remove the silver wheel covers (simulators) on a 2019 Sunstar 29VE dually. The original poster found that a 1-1/16" socket was too small and sought advice. Another member clarified that only two of the visible nuts are actual retainer nuts holding the cover, while the rest are decorative, and suggested using padded channel lock pliers if a socket isn’t available. The original poster confirmed the identification of the correct nuts but still preferred a socket for easier removal. A final response from a member with a 2017 29VE confirmed that a 1-1/8" socket fits the retainer nuts on their wheel covers.
Key takeaways:
- Only two nuts per wheel cover are functional retainers; the rest are decorative.
- For a 2017 29VE, a 1-1/8" socket works for the retainer nuts, likely applicable to the 2019 model.
- If a socket is unavailable, padded channel lock pliers can be used as an alternative.
I have a 2019 Sunstar 29VE. I need to remove the silver wheel covers on the duallys. I did a web search and the results indicated 1-1/16” would work. But that size is slightly too small. Does anyone know the proper size socket?
Thanks.
I have to ask, so beg pardon if toally wrong?
Are you familiar with the wheel simulators and how to find the correct one to remove the sim?
Uncertain what it may be but it is easy to miss that there are two "simulator nuts" to remove the cover that fits over the actual lug nuts?
Sorry if I am missing the true story!
But you may find there are two "real" nuts as marked here and those can often be removed with something like a padded set of channel lock pliers as they are just thin metal that only hold the cover, not the wheel itself? Real, old rusty lug nuts hidden under cover?
Two ways to ID these are the slight difference in the part you can see and also they have small grooves bent into the sides of the metal. In this case I think I can see the different shape of the base as they are smaller than the rest of the covers which are fixed in place, not to remove?
Yes, two lug nuts and the rest are decorative. By tapping the nuts I can tell which are hollow and which are actual nuts. They are also slightly different, as you identified. I haven’t been able to easily loosen the lug nuts with a wrench and thought that getting a socket would be easier. Maybe I’ll try a wrench again, but a socket would be ideal.
Thanks.
Okay, yes, they can get stuck!
Thought I could be wrong on what you were seeing but there should be some size that fits! I no longer have any on hand to size and maybe never knew what was the one I used. I tend to NOT be too involved in that end of mechanical, so just try till I find the right one.
My brother seemed to get all that good aptitude for eyeball size and he thinks I have to be a bit "slow" ! Trouble is, he is now about 12 hours away and not near as handy as when close!
If you choose to use pliers and a cloth, pull on the lug cover rather than trying to turn it. The actual lug nut should have been put on with an impact tool.
Follow up and new question on this thread. I was able to get the tire shop to remove the wheel covers and fix the issue I had. Now we are on the road and I noticed that they didn’t screw on one wheel cover tightly. One lug nut was loose and the other lug nut is gone.
How do I determine the proper replacement lug nut for this wheel cover?

No way to tell without a close look but be aware that your socket may be correct but the fake lug nut may have been bent slightly when put back with the wrong tool and not enough care!
The socket is a much better idea but when one is not on hand, there may have been other tools like a big channel lock pliers used. That can distort the shape from round to just a bit of oval that makes the right socket no longer fit!
