UPDATE 2/09/25
replaced the thermostat with a new coleman thermostat and it works like a charm. we have heat pump working as long as outdoor temp is above 40 degrees F, air conditioner works, gas furnace kicks in when outdoor temp drops below 40 F. thanks to all who took time to lend advice. I am not HVAC literate. so I was scared of what it might be. thankfully the old thermostat decided to retire.
