Charging batteries over the winter

I have 4 brand new 6 V batteries that I'd like to keep in like new condition for as long as possible. There's 400w of solar on the roof. I understand that removing the batteries and putting them in the basement (which I have always done before solar) on a trickle charger would be best. However, my question is, how much damage will be done to the batteries by leaving them in the motorhome over the winter? I'm in the Chicago area, unfortunately, lol!
Thank you for your reply.

Hi JBorst,
I am of the belief that a lead-acid battery must be recharged at least once-per-month to avoid a reduction in lifespan. The freezing cold doesn't help either.

A fully charged battery will not freeze, and your solar charger will keep the batteries charged if you keep snow from covering them. For long-term storage, I would put a jumper between the coach battery and the house batteries!

I agree with bob1957,

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge at a rate of 3% per month; so if you fully-charge otherwise good batteries they will self-discharge a bit less than18% in 6 months of storage. This will not harm your batteries..
I recommend disconnecting the neg. cables to insure there are no phantom draws..I've never removed my batteries unless they require replacing.

X2 on as long as you totally disconnect the batteries and you start the disconnect phase near 100% state of charge you don't need to do anything else. If you leave them connected there will be small drains and charging every 30 days is advised.
