Bucket List RV Travels Across America

I,m coming to the end of my RV years but still have 3 states on my bucket list. I've walked in Steinbeck's footsteps on "Cannery Row" and in Oklahoma as in the " Grapes of Wrath". I've lived 2 years in Mitchner's "Hawaii". I've spent weeks in Hemingway's "Key West". I've followed the Mississipi like Mark Twain's "Huck Finn". I've experienced the Sierras at Donner Summit, in Winter, like the Donner Party and visited John Muir's Yosemite. I live just miles from Pellican Island that is the first US National Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sad thing is that VERY FEW of the places that I have ever visited have remained anywhere near the same. In 1962, I plucked a nickel in a parking meter and viewed the Canadian side of the Niagra Falls for 20 minutes. Today, you pay $$ for a parking lot 3 miles away and another $$ for a van to take you to the same view point. Same for Yosemite Valley. Just drove into Yellowstone and signed up for an RV site. Eloped to Lake Tahoe on Thanksgiving weekend. Got the honeymoon suite, in a majo casino, at normal room rate, because it was one of few rooms not reserved.

In 1976, I drove US-2 from the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan to Glacier National Park and then down through Idaho following the Snake River. The ultimate 2 lane road trip.

Every time I hear Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away", I retake that US-2 trip. One of the lines goes "Twelve hours out of Mackinac City, I stopped to have a brew."

US highway 2 has been 4-lane from MN to Glacier since the last century. However I agree, there is much to see/do on US 2.
Did you stay a while in Havre MT? It's a very interesting city, especially Havre underground.

I've been in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. I try to only use Interstates to get me to the US Route I plan to travel. As I've completed a lot of the states around me, I have longer drives to get where I want to start. Done many US Routes end to end (almost all the E/W routes, many of the N/S) but always more to go. Done Route 66 end to end before it became an endless tourist trap (multiple times, actually) and Lincoln Highway.

There's always another road calling me.
