Best Short Queen Mattress?

Just returned from a 3 week journey with Powder, my dog, two guitars and my new 2018 WD 1790. The stock short Queen mattress was not at all comfy - foam atop plywood. Looking to replace it, like right now. What have others found that is a great mattress? Looking for cool and comfy - something that will be a good peaceful rest - we both thrashed around every night trying in vain to find comfort.

Powder looks like he's found the sweet spot.

A 2" foam topper from Walmart will be a cheap alternative. That's what we did. It made things better but not great. There are lots of mattress sellers online that sell rv queen size mattresses. The problem is, you can't lay on them and test them prior to purchase. And sending them back after you've removed them from the packaging and let them expand can be a problem.

They don't seem to use the best foam in the standard RV mattress. We are thinking about replacing ours as well. What we did in our old trailer and are doing for the time being in the Micro Minnie is use inflatable hiking sleeping pads. Ours are 1 1/2 inch thickness when inflated. We had them from our tent camping days and figured why not give them a try before buying a topper that might or might not work out. Being side sleepers it helps our hips and shoulders by giving some cushion and support.

We splurged on a short radius queen sleep number bed for our 2106FBS. We added a memory foam topper for extra comfort. We slept great on this combination and worth the money, at least to us. We have two cats that sleep with us and they seem to like it as well.

We bought a 10" thick, dual density foam, mattress at Big Lots called a Zeopedic. It is the best we've ever slept on. It came as an 80" queen, but we opened the zippered cover and trimmed the length with a serated, bread knife. Love it. The market is full of these foam mattresses. Most should be good, but I can vouch for this one.

BTW, we had already tried the 3" foam topper trick and were not satisfied.

We bought a 2013 Winnebago Itasca Sunstar Sport, in 2017, which the dealer put a new 6" short queen radius mattress in which turned out to be extremely firm. Last year, we tried 2 3" memory foam toppers (one several years older than the top one) and were not satisfied. The memory foam, after time, has wells in it that do not bounce back as quickly as they used to and we end up rolling together. This year, we ordered a 3" natural latex (soft) from foamorder.com and tried it on our home mattress and loved it. We are on a 3 1/2 month trip and have concluded the latex helps some, but on the very firm base mattress, it is still uncomfortable to sleep on our sides. We are seriously considering getting a new medium/soft Denver Mattress from an RV dealer in Phoenix (we are from Arizona) who has one we can actually lay on before buying (eliminates the returning over the internet sale). Then we won't need a topper and we can leave our latex topper at home. We will have a very firm 6" RV short queen for sale this fall....in case anyone is interested. :)

Comfortable Mattress

We trashed the model that arrived with the camper immediately after our first outing. We purchased a 10” short queen SleepRevolution memory foam mattress from Sams club ($199). It arrived in three days, and it could not be more comfortable. No more aching hips or back!

We just installed the Froli bed system - a little set of springs for the stock mattress. Seems like a big improvement. Look for reviews.

Ditto on the Froli. I got the “Star” queen...took a few adjustments but the improvement was substantial.

Mattress

We were told at the dealership, McClains, by the service writer that Winnebago does not put high quality mattresses in their motorhomes. We bought a foam cover from CostCo and cut it down to size. A friend of ours bought a trailer and found out that he had the same problem. He, too, bought the cover from Costco and now has the best of the best.

Suggest you look for a "local", if possible, manufacturer, visit, try out all of their offerings & when you find that perfect one, have them make it to your dimensions. Cheaper in the long run than add-ons and highly advertised brands. You'll find the quality as good or better & made for your RV. Definitly improved our sleep, disposition and reduced the chiropractor visits.

A friend just bought from mattressinsider.com and likes it so far. He got gel foam but I prefer a firm innerspring so I’ll go with that instead. Costs more but if it’s good it’ll be worth it. My former trailer had an awesome mattress in it stock. I should have kept it when I sold it.

I considered the mattress insider one, but its $750, which is about 5% of the new cost of my trailer - that's a bit steep. I just ordered a Serenia $299 off Amazon - we'll see, it can't be worse than the stock one that's in it now. I'll follow up - if it gets here in time, powder and i are set for another mountain trip next week.

Pleased to report the Serenissima mattress did well. It’s not bad at all. Grade scale I’d give it a B. Beats the stock mattress by a mile.
