2002 Horizon 34HD Fuel Gauge Reads Empty With Fuel in Tank

On my 2002 Horizon 34HD the Fuel gauge reads empty even though it is 3/4 of a tank full. I don’t have any other gauge issues on the dash other than that. My question is “ how do I get access to the sending unit”? Once I find access I can start testing the sending unit with my Ohm meter to determine if the sending unit is bad.
I’m almost positive it is the sending unit at this point. I have come a long way on this Rv after it was given to me. It has set several years and only has 41,000 miles on it. Once this is fixed I am getting tires on it and making a short trip to test it all out.

Your RV is a Winnebago/Itasca but that only applies to the “house.” Best to check with the chassis manufacturer (Freightliner) for info on chassis issues like this.

Randall, You probably have a Freightliner XC chassis. The fuel level sending unit is in the fuel tank. The tank needs to be removed to access the sending unit.

Given the age of the rig, call Freightliner to get the most recent part number for the sending unit.

I had the exact same problem in my 2003 Horizon Itasca 39QD. I dropped the tank, changed the sending unit, problem still existed. I finally called the Freightliner chassis Helpdesk. He walked me through the steps to identify the issue. Mine was a grounding issue isolated to the fuel gauge. I occasionally see the problem arise again. I whack the dash and the gauge starts working again. I don’t recommend that fix, but don’t pull the tank until you call the Helpdesk. Good luck.

You told him to call Freightliner and I told him to call freightliner. Even the followup posts have been... call Freightliner. Seems we're all on the same page. But my post was "not really helpful at all." Thanks for letting me know.

I did include that chassis issues were not Winnebago issues because a lot of people don't know this fact. In case they don't know, as might seem the case, it can be very helpful to let them know so that they don't turn to a Winnebago dealer for help.
