Hi y‘all!

We have a 2000 Suncruiser Itasca, and the most recent Hurricane tore the front part of the fiberglass roof off.
Looks like the wood underneath is still ok, but some of the styrofoam went with it.
The rest of the roof looks kinda ok, although it has been ripped out at the sides from the rails.

Does anyone have experience with that?

We try to figure out if it would be worth to submit a claim (we don’t want to risk a total loss and salvage title). Or have it fixed ourselves.

Any good experience with a mechanic here?

Any insight is greatly appreciated, thank you!

You must head over to YouTube and watch the videos of AZ EXPERT. He has one new one and half a dozen older ones. It is a very hard repair and expensive to have done for you.

I guess the key question is how much was torn off and how much will it cost to repair it. If the damage is significant, I wouldn't be surprised if your insurance totals your MH.

I've watched many AZ Expert's videos on Winnebago roof replacement. Although it's not an easy job, it's akin to gluing a sheet of laminate to a countertop. Clearly, laminating a 35' x 8.5' "countertop" is a much larger job than an 6' x 3' kitchen counter.

From watching the videos, I'd say the main difficulty is handling such a large sheet of Filon (the material used) without damaging it and applying it straight and free of creases and air bubbles. Filon itself is relatively inexpensive:

Personally, I'd tackle replacing a few feet of Filon on my 2002, but it all depends on your DIY skills. If you mess it up, it can be removed and you're only out the material cost. You'll have to devise a way to weatherproof the seam between the new and the old but that shouldn't be too difficult. I'd think some sort of aluminum batten and sealant would suffice. It'd be a different situation if your MH was a much newer model.

Here's one of many AZ Expert videos on replacing the Filon:
