A member experienced a right front tire blowout on their 1998 Winnebago Brave, which resulted in the engine air intake housing and filter assembly being torn off and lost on the highway. After failing to recover the part, the member sought advice on sourcing a replacement for the Chevy 454 gas engine, noting that Winnebago no longer supplies this vintage component.

Other RVers suggested several practical steps: contacting salvage yards with detailed photos and carburetor information to...

While traveling along the highway, the right front tire suddenly blew and self-destructed. After pulling over to the side of the road a little ways down, and while installing the spare tire, I noticed the engine air intake housing and filter assembly had apparently been torn loose and was gone. Apparently, it had fallen on the side of the road. After installing the spare tire, which took a little while, I then walked back to retrieve the air filter housing assembly. Unfortunately, it was not there. Apparently, some (SO:cool: had stopped, picked it up, and taken the housing / filter assembly.

So, I am now looking for an engine inlet air duct housing assembly for a Chevy 454 gas engine. Being somewhat of a vintage unit, Winnebago does not have them of course. So, guess I have two options? Try to find a suitable assembly at a salvage yard or possibly fabricate something suitable that would hold the air filter.

Comments are welcome,
Thank you,

It's always hard to say what happens to parts that get lost on the road. Maybe somebody picked it up and it was stolen?
Or maybe it is now embedded in the grill of a Peterbuilt headed North and you are lucky you did not have to pay for the damage?
I once lost a two wheel utility trailer going about 60 on a major interstate full of traffic and could not find it for 30-40 minutes! I could not stop quick and neither did anybody else, so WHERE is the trailer?
I finally found it had taken off into tall weeds and the only sign of where it left the road was tire tracks in the weed patch! Boy was I relieved!
Sometimes the only way to go is forget it and move on to what we CAN control!

I would thing making some contact with salvage yards might be the better way to go as there are networks do deal with salvage and with a bit of contact, you may find just what is needed. As a start, it may be a big help to have some info like pictures of what you need. If it has RV specific points, it will be worthwhile to know what those look like to avoid getting some hits on items that are not going to work.

Chassis items are not Winnebago parts. You’re looking for chassis, presumably Chevy, parts. Start looking with those suppliers.

Have a look at the Gail Banks web site, my rig has an aftermarket Banks system, thirty years old now but they might still have something!
