1984 Chieftain-how do you pull engine?

Anyone know how to pull the 454 from a 1984 Chieftain for rebuild? Out the front or inside then out?

When our 87 Suncruiser P30 454 was replaced under warranty, the dealer jacked the front way up and did the swap from below.

87 suncruiser is nothing like a 1984 Winnie Chieftain. They share a common P30 chassis but nothing else.Thank you anyway.


I need a definitive answer form someone that is certin for this model.

ya they are the same. Just because the body style seems different. You can see why they would of dropped out the bottom because they probably pulled the trans and engine as an assy.

Not sure why I care.

if you cant figure it out you have no business trying to begin with..

The engine is dropped out from the bottom. Parts of the chassis have to be removed for the maneuver. After an engine is installed and running and the chassis components are reinstalled, you will need to have an alignment done.

i know when i put a new transmission in my 91 no suspension parts were removed and the engine could of slid out the same hole.

Remove the Trans cross member. but what the **** do i know. Maybe I did it wrong.

I know things are getting grumpy all around the world so don't take this as too hard but when I look at the size of my RV door, I don't think I want to try to get an engine out that way! YUP! I think going down and out is the better way to go.

On the old P30 its always been down and out as others have already commented. You'd have to strip the engine down to the bare block to take it out the top and somehow maneuver it through the coach to possible get it out the door or potentially remove the windshield to get it out afterwards. Seats, parts of the dash, carpeting, etc would have to be removed first too and then you'd have to clean up the mess inside the coach and reassemble everything again.

If it has an iron intake figure on dealing with about 675 to 700 lbs after the transmission is removed.

I would call Jasper Engine's see if they know how to replace it

on our old 79 itasca they took the 454 engine out the front for a complete rebuild
