Had same problem with ours. Never was able to be fixed so our solution was the same as yours-until we traded it off. Too small of a motor is my guess.

Turns out one of the slide locks was slightly bent and was not retracting completely-once. Very mysterious since we've never used the locks because of all the bad reports we've heard about them.
