2003 Journey/DL. Unknown black component beside starter relay

Cat 330. I changed the starter relay, there was a 3"x3" black component beside it that I managed to break in the process. (one of the two studs came out) and I really need to know what it is and what it does. The two studs have starter motor size wire attached. The only identifying marks on it are "aux" by one stud and "bat" by the other. Looking in the hole left by the missing stud it appears the stud contacted a piece of metal running to the other stud. I'm thinking it's a circuit breaker that resets it self. I've gone to all the auto parts stores in town and no one has much of a clue.
The starter relay does not have sufficient wire size coming in or going out to start the engine.
I don't have a picture of the broken part but I can get one tomorrow if it helps.
I put both cables on one stud on the broken box and the engine starts and runs (I didn't try to start the engine without the broken box wired, brain fart).
I feel very fortunate, I'm parked for the next two weeks and have time to find one.
