New Micro Minnie FLX part timer (for now...)

Hello everyone. I haven't picked up my rig yet, waiting to get my trade in back from the shop.

I was planning to sell my properties here in east Texas in a year or two, and hit the road in a Super C diesel, towing my Chevy Colorado diesel. But, with the price of those rigs, that would leave few options if full time RV isn't my cup of tea.

So, I'm going to try easing into it with the Micro Minnie. Purchase it now, and start making some longer trips until I'm ready to make the decision.

Welcome to the group. I’ve had mine for just over a month now. Taken it out for two weekends but now it’s winterized as I live in Michigan and it’s been getting below freezing every night the last week. This is a great place for a lot of info your dealer probably won’t give you.

We just finished up a full year of owning the FLX and I think something around
>= 10 trips. We love it and have been extremely happy with our choice.

I will point out that the battery is not a legit AC power option in hot weather. You will want a small generator to keep it running. I also know some southwest folks have been having over heating issues with said battery in the really spicy weather.

If you aren’t staying in hot as hell weather though it does a fantastic job boondocking!

Taking delivery this Friday. No trip planned yet, I've already got a trip set up for Big Bend Ranch State Park , heading out on November 11 and returning on the 20th. So this weekend and next will be at home just making sure all the electrical components are configured correctly and everything is working correctly. Big Bend state park isn't the place to be working out bugs...

That reads weird. The Big Bend trip is without the trailer. Everything was already planned and set up before I decided to get the trailer.

Finally got the charging systems configured correctly, installed the Andersen WDH and took it for about a 60 mile test drive today. The Andersen hitch seems to work extremely well.

Shakedown run

Trip to Big Bend without the MM was epic, got some great pics and found "the view" in the park.

Now I'm on my shakedown run with the trailer. Spending the week at Martin Dies State Park in East Texas, one of my favorite places to get away reasonably close to home. Will be working from here this week, it seems my Verizon signal is strong enough to pull it off.

So far, everything is working great. Only comments I have so far are:

1. The mattress is really bad.
2. Fridge has to be turned almost all the way up to get and keep things cold.
3. Burners on the stove are very hot, hard to keep things from burning when you need a low flame.

The Dometic fridge is a joke. Ours and many other owners have to crank it all the way up to keep it cold enough.

There are several after market mattress makers that have RV sizes. Our Brooklyn Bedding 12” one is freaking amazing but it does sit too high. You can’t access the area under the closets because it’s level with the bottom of them. We’ve just ordered the Bear Trek to try out. It runs 8” but the downside is it doesn’t have the extra layer of transition foam. We’ll see how it is since we’re side sleepers. Even still, it’ll be a hella lot better than that crap that came with it.

We’ve not really had an issue with the burners. If anything, it takes a while to boil water.

Just got home from my 4th week long trip, went up to Ennis, TX for the Bluebonnet trails. Weather wasn't great for pictures most of the week, but I got a few. I did have a couple of things go wrong, and have to get some warranty work done now.

The black tank valve locked up, and I bent the handle before I realized it. I was at the dump station when it happened. Fortunately I was able to get it to close but it has to be fixed before the next trip.

Also, the sprayer quick connect failed, when I removed the hose the valve didn't close and I can't get the hose to reconnect, so I can't hook up to water or use the water pump until it's fixed as well.

In good sunlight, I only need added electric if the air conditioner is necessary. I think my Honda 2000 inverter generator will provide more than I need for most trips. However, I am going to purchase a suitcase solar panel, to help when I'm not out in open sun.

Thanks. I'll be picking up my trailer next month up in Colorado. Will probably have some more questions once I'm living with it. Former RV guy. We had a 2006 Winnebago Adventurer 35U 10 years. This will be our first travel trailer. Like the idea of having a smaller unit.

Scott, those issues are pretty standard RV fair. If your dealer can't accommadate you with a quick appointment for service - many dealers will tell you it will take one to two months just to get in this time of year - consider getting approval from Winnebago for an independent tech to come to you to quickly fix those issues.

The first is probably a loose bowden cable. A simple fix, but if the cable got kinked it might need replaced. When the cable housing is loose the cable can't push and pull the gate valve correctly and instead of the gate valve moving the cable housing moves.

The second issue could be many things but kind of sounds like a stuck or clogged backflow preventor.

Of course, it's impossible for me to fully know what work needs done. But all too often we see new owners go out for a first trip, have a couple of simple issues and then take the RV to the dealer for warranty repair. Then the dealer keeps the RV for one, two, even three months and the whole camping season is lost.

Repairs like you reported are simple common issues that almost any independent RV tech could quickly fix and get you back out camping. And, if you call Winnebago Towable Customer Service they can authorize, even suggest, a repair person near you and work with that tech to cover his cost as part of your warranty.

You may need to call the dealer first and be told of some ridiculously long time frame to get in for service before Winnebago will authorize an independent Tech. Or for the nearest dealer to be a long way away. But you may not have to go through that step either. Winnebago knows that dealers are way behind on repairs.

Obviously, suit yourself. But I'd say the vast majority of us RV owners have all found that going to the dealer for service is something to be avoided regardless of the cost. Unlike buying a new Ford or Chevy and taking it to the dealer as a matter of course for warranty work, your RV dealer is interested in selling RVs and hoping to never have to deal with you again.

I'm with you completely. I have a tech that I've used before who's pretty quick and much more affordable than the dealership. But (misplaced or not) loyalty made me decide to give them a call first, and if the answer was like you stated I would just take it to my guy.

But, they got me in this coming Friday, and are confident that they can get a good turnaround on it. So, I'll give them a shot at it. If it doesn't go well, then lesson learned...

Update - repairs are done and all covered under warranty. I picked it up last week and am headed out for a short stay this weekend visiting friends.

Communication from the service departments wasn't great, but they got it done in the time I needed.

Love our Champion 2500 dual fuel. No need to carry messy smelly gas. All the fuel you need on the trailer tongue. Very lightweight and can be stowed in pass thru. 53db. Outputs 15amps when running on propane.

Thanks. Coincidentally, I bought a Champion 2500 duel fuel as well. I like that it is both compact and lightweight. The duel fuel feature sealed the deal. Thanks again.
