I have a 2000 Adventurer with 30 amp service. I am the second owner. The transfer switch is fried. The repair facility called and asked why I have a 50 amp switch on a 30 amp service. I haven't yet got hold of the original owner to find out if he had the switch changed.
Is it possible Winnebago would have put a 50 amp transfer switch on a 30 amp rig? It Todd switch if that matters.

Could be 50 amp because of the size of your Generator.

hotrod 32, you should have no problem with a 50A transfer switch. It doesn't need 50A to make it work! It's only going to handle the amps coming in through your power cord, and you've said you have a 30A coach. You should replace it with a 50A switch (and add a surge protector).

hotrod32,

Before you jump to the 30amp ATS, be aware that Winnebago did indeed use a 50amp ATS on a 30amp system. They used the 50amp relays to tie the generator, which output more than 30amps, into the 30 amps system.

You might want to check your generator size and make sure of what you have. If you need additional information, feel free to contact me via PM or e-mail

Hope this helps,
Mike

I had the repair facility go through my Winnebago suitcase full of info and they found it was factory installed and yes Winnebago used a 50 because of the generator. That is the good news. The bad news is it is fried and will need to be replaced.

I have an Itasca Suncruiser. It had 30-amp service (before I converted it to 50 amps) and the transfer switch was a 50-amp unit. I am not sure that I have ever seen a 30-amp transfer switch. I doubt there would be enough difference in cost for the manufacturers to make one.

The fact that the generator may put out more than 30 amps is irrelevant. It does it using two circuits, neither of which is more than 30, most likely.

A previous poster said that the 50 was OK for your rig; he was right. As long as the current rating (amps) is equal to or greater than the capacity of the electrical system, it will be safe.

A 5500 watt generator is capable of producing 45.8 amps (5500w/120v = 45.8amps). Thus a 30 amp transfer switch is never used in a class A.
