Wondering if Winnebago is considering coming out with a FRED based model, perhaps something in the 30-35 ft. range? i think many of us would be very interested.

Good afternoon, Craig,

Winnebago is not planning on using FRED for 2009 model year units.

There will be a very unique full wall slide 34' diesel coming late this calendar year.

Doesn't sound to me like this new 34' diesel will be a FRED.

34'? Cool. That is if it's really 34'. We have about 35'2" of space...

Sounds like Winnebago took note that there were many folks not happy when they stopped building the smaller diesels. Now lets hope they improve the motor as well.

And Workhorse is starting to build a shorter UFO chassis for intermediate size coaches.

I'm hoping to see some 22K UFOs on shorter boxes in 2009 but time will tell. I think that it's going to be a product that is going to perform well because for many of the RV buying public smaller and not bigger is better.

I can see it now a nice 33 to 35 foot UFO with a FWS and improved basement storage! I'm looking forward to MY-2009!

Now whether or not the public is ready to start buying again is any body's guess given the current economical climate were experiencing at the moment. The "Recreation" industry is going to take it on the chin pretty hard I think regardless if your selling RVs, boats, or snowmobiles.

How about Chrysler closing down for 2 weeks in July! I wonder if that is going to apply to FLCC as well BUT I think that they are owned my Daimler since the divorce.

Must have been a Senior Moment.

Until I figured out you were referring to a Full Wall Slideout, I thought you meant that new Front Wheel Steering.!

Mike;

Is this the official announcement that there will be a 2009 UFO on the pad in Conway?

Don, I hope you aren't reading this as "my 2009" but "model year - 2009" . I wish I could get a new motorhome but I'm retired!

Here's something to consider about the FRED.

I was recently looking at a Tiffin 34TGA Allegro with the FRED, but noticed that the difference between the GVWR and the GCWR was only 2,000lbs. The chassis and engine are much heavier than either the Workhorse of Ford options. This could be a cause for concern if you plan on towing a toad--anything over 2,000lbs weight on the toad would have to be removed from the cargo carrying capacity.

What what I have gleaned from the Tiffin forum, the limiting feature may be the transmission.

I could be wrong, but it sure raised some doubts in my mind about the FRED option in a smaller MH.

Workhorse should give you a company "car"!

My ideal motorhome, or at least the next one in my garage, keeps getting closer.

22K UFO, under 35', bunks...

Any official news on what powertrain options are looking like for an '09 UFO? I forget when the 8.1 is done, '09? '10? How long is Winne "stuck" with not using a UFO diesel?

You are correct about the Allegro FRED and it's transmission being the limiting factor. The entry level Allegro comes with a 300 HP Cummins ISB and the Allison 2200 transmission, which limits the GCWR to 26,000 lbs, effectively giving you only 2K of extra towing capacity over the GVWR. However, the Allegro is kept low for pricing reasons. The Allegro Bay does get the "better" FRED chassis with the 340 HP Cummins ISB, Allison 2100 transmission, and a 30,000 lb GCWR.

Overall, FRED makes up a huge portion of the chassis choices under both the Allegro and the Allegro Bay and their owners are very happy with them. So, a FRED is still viable as a chassis for smaller motorhomes. The RV manufacturer just needs to be sure to put the full version of the FRED under it, rather than the stripped own version.

I had "heard", probably on iRV2, that Winnebago has an exclusive agreement with Freightliner to only use Freightliner chassis in a diesel application. Thus, if they introduce a FRED it would have to be on the Freightliner chassis.

Someone correct me if I'm incorrect.
