San Antonio bypass heading South on 281

Anyone know the best route around San Antonio (less traffic good roads) heading south coming in on 281?

Loop 1604W to i-37S will add 20 miles to your trip.

Loop 1604E to I-37S will add 12 miles to your trip

Personally, I'd stay on 281, but the other 2 options only add a half hour or less. Even Loop 1604 is some heavy traffic.

I-610E to 37 will only add 5 minutes or so.

San Antonio traffick in any direction can have some slow-downs.

Is there a reason you do not want to go straight through on 281?

It's easy for me to say which route. I live South o Houston. Try that some time. I'm just used to it.

On a two lane hwy I stay in the right lane. On three or more I'm in thr second one from the right unless it is very light traffic. That gives others two lanes to go around me and I don't have to worry about on/off ramps.

We have taken TX 46 from US 281 through New Braunfels and Seguin to US 181. At Sinton, take US 77 straight to San Benito. Quite a bit of traffic in New Braunfels, depending on time of day, but you bypass both San Antonio and Corpus Christi. We use that route to go to the NPS campground on North Padre Island..

If it's lunch time, stop by Rudy's BBQ in New Braunfels or True Texas Grill in Seguin for a great BBQ brisket sandwich.

Well an update. Went through San Antonio on Saturday about 10:30am. Stayed on 281 to 37-S straight through. Not much traffic. Probably would not have been bad if there was. Had a tip from a Harvest Host to stay in second from right lane all the way through and it would put you in correct lane to go on
37-S .
Stayed at a nice 60mph speed.

Why would you want to avoid going through lovely San Antonio on 281? First, it's a straight shot north/south through the city to your destination. Second, unless you're passing through north-to-south during 8 a.m. morning drive traffic, you'll have no traffic issues. Third, it's a wide, well-maintained freeway passing through lovely greenways, interesting architecture and a nice drive with a (if you try hard) a whiff of the best Tex-Mex food in the world.

San Antonio traffic isn't crazy-bad like Dallas or Houston or, God-forbid, Austin.

Enjoy your trip and relish your time in SA, long or short.
