OK, I give up...

I was once in manufacturing and we had a system called 'intelligent numbers'. In other words, there were codes for what the different nomenclature meant. I see the same thing in travel trailers: 'BH' for bunkhouse, 'RK' for rear kitchen and so forth.

As I keep looking an Winnebagos, I have been trying to figure out of there is one. For example, a 36M is actually 37' long- and I can't figure out what the 'M' stands for.

Can someone please help me find out if there is an intelligent system, or if it is just sequential. Either way, I am good... I just would like to know...

My thanks,

Lindsay

It would seem that all manufactures add several inches to the advertised length. We have a "40'" and of course it's much closer to 41. The benefit is when a campground states a max of 40' we have no problem. What the M is ?????

If my memory serves me, the 36M was originally 36' plus a few inches. I think it was with the 2013 model that they put a greater slope on the front cap (for streamlining, I presume) which pushed the lower part of the cap out another foot or so. They just didn't change the model number. No idea about the 'M'.

I might just have to do that! In the meantime, I am glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know and is wondering ...

Thanks,

Who says the numbering system has to make any sense?

Our Cameo is a 37RSQ and it is 38' with 4 slides. What does RSQ stand for? It had a king bed, so the Q was not fro queen.

They could have just as easily called it a A1B2C3 or R2D2 or CP3O.

Yep,
I too have wondered what the letters after the numeral meant. For instance, a have a couple of buddies, (can you believe that?) that have the 2004, 36' Journeys and they are designated as 36G but, our Itasca, of the same year is a 36GD, Hmmmmm. All are diesels so, the "D" after the G, I'm pretty sure does not designate "Diesel". This has been asked before and I forgot what the possible answer was quite some time ago.

I think my Mirada 34MBS stands for May Be 'Spensive.
Or if it refers to the owner, Must Be Stupid?

Not really, love the Beast!

Nothing has to make sense in their scheme....After all we have Army Intelligence and that certainly doesn't make sense.

You need to read the spec sheet or even better take a tape measure when looking on the lot because the dealers normally don't even know. Our 34Y was listed as 34' on the dealers sheet when in fact it is 35'-3". We looked at a unit that was a 35 something, the dealer had it listed as a 35' Motor Home and in fact it was 37'-2" long. Don't seem like a problem unless you have a 36' garage and you don't measure it before you buy... Good luck with the letters.. I always thought the Tour 42 QD was maybe a Quad Slide, but then what is a 42 U, upside down......

Looking at Winni web site, the number designates the approximate length and the letter is the floor plan.

On my Winnebago the 40U is simply a 40 ft coach with the U as the floor plan designation.

In many cases the manufacturers have several potential models and versions of models "on the drawing board" at one time. There may be 10 or 12 36' models up for consideration. At the time the drawings are initiated they are assigned an identifying letter in addition to a number. The number usually refers to the length of the first iteration of that model, and the letter is a version of that model.

After the review processes some models and versions are discarded and some go into production. They are identified through the production process and eventually on the sales floor by the originally designated number and letter.

A well known example might be Henry Fords Model T. While it was his first commercially successful automobile it was the 20th (identified by the letter T) attempt. Another example is the Chevrolet/Workhorse model P chassis. The original versions were built in the 1960's as chassis for delivery trucks and school busses. Later versions were modified to suit the RV market.

Once upon a time, all the folks at Winnebago got together for a brain storming session.
Things got out of hand and the suggestion was made to"make them wonder."

It was late in the day so the idea was approved.

Ever since then model numbers make no sense.

Funny! (I confess I have been in a meeting or two like that in a past life...)
