Need to Replace 2001 Onan 5500 with newer unit

I have a 2001 Adventurer 32.
The Onan 5500 generator died and isn't repairable.
Is there a better option for a generator than a new Onan?
I loved it but might not be practical to replace it with Onan since we're looking at a 21 year old motor home.
I had thought to just fit my portable generator in the compartment, but don't know how well that would work.

Any suggestions on how others have approached this issue will be appreciated.

With the portable one in the original compartment I would be concerned with the exhaust.
