Gas mileage going up?

Was at a tour in the Freightliner Factory in SC. They said the new regulations, the EPA 13, that the Cummins engines going into the 2014 Winnebagos (and those started into production in March or April) will achieve considerably better gas mileage, as much as a 30% improvement. They mentioned a 6.7L Cummins getting 7-8 mpg should see 11-12 mpg. We have a 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U with the ISL 8.3L Cummins engine. We love our RV for many reasons (floor plan, storage space, comfort). Pulling our Caddy SRX4 four down, we get 8.4 mpg in the hills of NC/TN and up to 10 mpg in the coastal and flatland areas. We go no faster than 60mph unless a downhill increases the speed. Retired, we are in little rush now.

What are people seeing out there? Anyone have the new 2014 Journey 40U or its kissing cousin, Itasca Meridian 40U? Any mpg to report yet?

Thank you!

I haven't bothered to do the gallons versus miles logging, but the computer on our '11 Tour 42QD shows 7.5 mpg after 5600 miles. What's odd is that it was higher until I got out of the mountains. Maybe I altered my speed, who knows. I spend more on tags in AZ for this coach than the fuel will cost me, so it's low on my "things to worry about" list.

My Serrano FRED was rated at 13.4.

That was probably tested dead-empty on flat road. With load and toad I average a bit over 11.

Marketing hype?

The same engine will be going into other RV Class A units from Fleetwood, Tiffin and others. There was some discussion that Monaco and HR will be leaving the MaxxForce engines which are not meeting the EPA regs. Not sure if that is true but the gentleman was pretty confident that for ASV, new owner of Monaco and HR, to be compliant with new EPA, they would most likely revert the RVs to Cummins from MaxxForce. Also, the gas increases they mentioned were the Cummins 6.7 and 8.3 ISL engines.

I've never gotten better than 8.6, which was on flat land (I95). Mostly high 7s and low 8s. Never exceed 65 mph. Smaller and lighter too. 36 foot 2003 Winnebago Journey 330 Cat, (7.2 L) 6 speed Allison. Honda CRV. Not too great!

So far I have been seeing 8.5 to 10 in steady state driving at 70 mph.

Are you certain you have the ISL? Mine is the ISC 8.3L 380-HP. I have not tried to figure fuel milage because we have been dry docking often. The genset auto runs to boost the batteries or run the HVAC so I have no real point of reference. I have observed that it seems we are going further on a tank than we did with the 400 HP Cummins we just traded.

We love our coach. Just moved in in late May. Have traveled from Ft Myers, FL to Baltimore, MD, Middleboro, MA, WV, TN, SC and are now in AL soon to depart to TX. Every day is a another day to say Thank You LORD! We have so much more room in the living quarters and in the basement than we had. Other than the Tour/Ellipse I don't know of another coach with so much storage room and living comfort. But, I must confess, I am not a guru of fine motorhomes.

We just rolled home from Emporia Va where I filled up to the Hudson Valley of NY 460 odometer miles. Ran generator 1/2 the time including stopover in Bel Air MD. I put 51.1 gallons in when I got here and almost over- filled it.
That comes to 9.001 mpg.....pulling my Tahoe...41 ft HR Endeavor with 400 ISL Cummins with 8800 miles on it averaging 65 mph.
You could have knocked me over with a feather.

My '11 Journey 34y (which is a lot lighter than you big boys and has the 340 hp 6.7L) has been getting between 10.2 and 10.5. and I'm tickled to death. We have 6,000 miles on the rig, so I'm hoping for improvement as it gets broke in...

I am getting 16 mpg consistently and on one stretch in the flats hit 18.3 for about a hundred miles. My 2013 Via is still breaking in and I expect the mileage to improve. If I tow my 4,000 pound Jeep I lose about 2 mpg.
