Fuel cost for 1986 Cheiftan 22'

I just purchased a 1986 Cheiftan 22'
I live in NC and leaving to go back home to Indiana. Its 720 miles. It has a Chevy 454 big block. Alt of people are telling me its going to cost me upwards of $1000.00 for gas. Im sure someone has traveled this many miles and can give me an accurate amount closer to what I might soend. I hope you all have good news for me. Thankyou and happy RV'n

Some guessing required but that's what an estimate is, so why not?
I think you will do much better than that.
$1000 at $3 per gallon means you need around 33 gallons to get there.
So if we divide 720 miloes by the 33 gallons they are telling you it will take, they are saying the big rig only get around 2.1 mpg !!!

I would say it more likely gets in the 8-9 mpg but you do have a lot of slack built in between those two numbers! Say you get into the heavy footing it and you only get 5 mpg? Try keeeping it down below 80!!!
That's 144 gallon and if we say gas jumps for some price gouging? 3.50 per gallon takes you up around $500 for the trip up???
I'm thinking it'll be less than $1000 for pretty sure!

Here in Indiana regular unleaded is over $4/G near interstates, a mile away from them it is $3,40/G. KY has the lowest price for fuel, again away from interstates, in some places it's $2.xx/G.
Your fuel mileage depends on your mind and right foot. A good reminder to drive easy in sit a cow-bell on the floor near you. If it rings you need to driver easier and smoother.

Wasn't clear if your miles our one way or round trip..

If you want to sure, go fill up on a pump until it stops. Get on a highway and drive 20 mile or so returning to same pump. Track # of gallons added. Divide total miles i.e. 20 miles by # of gallons just purchased. i.e. 3 gallons. That means you are getting 6.66 miles per gallon. Divide that by total miles planned to be driven 720 miles / 6.66 mpg = 108 gallons of gas . Assume $3.40 / gallon = $367.00

Depends on which way you go to. I'm by the Outer Bank of NC . GF is from OHIO. Laurelville OH.
We go through Richmond hit 81 down to 64 across the mountains. 585 miles on that trip but your going over the Blue Ridge Mountains. I'm guessing you 454 has fuel injection. My 35 Chieftrain is a 2000. v 10 . Driving it home it got 8.5 mpg @ 58 mph but we bought it on the coast of Carolina . Its for short beach trips only. Flat land. . . Added 4 bottoms of injecter cleaner to one tank, now its 9.5 to 10 mpg open HWY adv 9 on a trip at 58 mph. .
Your ECM is to old to use a scan gauge. One gauge I would install is a moroso transmission temp gauge so you can watch the Trans Temps. In something that old hard pulling will heat it up quick. If you have not serviced the transmission on something that old Do it. Don't wait.
Boy that had mine bought it in Washington State, drove it to Los Angeles visited family then was bringing his family east to live in Chesapeake VA.
Blew the motor in Palm Springs trying to get here. . 8000 dollars later he made the trip.
I"m a drag racer . That 454 is a tough old girl but those transmission won't as tough as those motors. Spend the time have someone install a transmission temp gauge for you. My 2000 a scan gauge would work. One of the members on here mentioned it now I have two. One of the rV one on my custom Beach Tahoe. Get that trans gauge installed . Thats my advice.

We had a 33' with that engine and got over 8 mpg so at today's gas prices that should get you about $.40 to $.45 per mile or about $ 350-$400 for the trip. I just left Johnson City TN and am headed to Indiana, fuel prices are fine so it shouldn't be a problem.
