Extended Warranty (service contract)

I have a 2016 Winnebago Vista LX 30T. The warranty expires 9/8/16. For health reasons, we were not able to use our RV until July 2016. At that time we had electrical issues. After 2 trips to the dealer (round trip 200 miles each trip), the issues have been corrected. The one year warranty ends on 9/8. We are preparing to take our RV on its maiden voyage.

In general, I discourage my family and friends from purchasing extended warranties on appliances and electronics. But now I find myself considering an extended service contract on our RV. I have researched this issue and think I understand the pro's and con's, and different types of contracts (exclusionary, directly pay repair shop, etc).

I would like to hear recommendations. Have you had occasion to use such a policy? If so, would you recommend a particular company?

Any advice will be appreciated.

I think the decision really boils down to what gives you peace of mind, because it is something you but and hope you never have to use. :-)

This where I purchased mine. They have a good reputation and good prices.

Good Sam also sales extended service plans.

Congrats on your new RV!

I think I would take a one year that covers about everything. It will be $$$$ but after the shake down and all is well dis continue and get the money back on the remainder of the time.

I am concerned that without a shake down period (literally) that I have no idea what else may happen.

I will check both of these sites. Thanks for the reply

Has anyone had experience with extended warranty service? Will most repair shops accept it. I read that the better policies pay immediately with a corporate credit card. That seems pretty fool proof for the repair shop. How about towing? I think The Ford warranty covers as well as my vehicle insurance.

I also never buy extended warranties but with a motor home you have a very complex thing that is being stressed every time you take it down the road. It's not if something will break it's when. You add that to the fact that parts and service for these things are very over priced compared to you car or home you can have a costly situation especially if you did not get all the bugs worked out in your factory warranty period. If you are a super handy Mr. Fix it that's one thing but if you don't have that super power an all inclusive plan will come in handy in my thought pattern anyway. i would say to check into one. The one I chose is from CoachNet. Coach Net Protect Premium covers everything and also included their road hazard assistance for a very reasonable price for a full 5 year period. Low deductable as well, and is backed by Winnebago.

The other thing you need to address is how handy are you with repairs? Do you have the space to perform them and do you have the money to have someone else perform the repair if it's outside your comfort or knowledge zone???
You can always take the money that you would have paid for an extended warranty and put it in an account and let it earn interest and hope you never need it but it is there when you do. It might not cover all of the repair but then again you may end up with a lot of money in the bank for not having to use it.
On new units it's cheaper but the older they are the more they cost because the warranty company knows something will fail and getting replacements are next to impossible due to newer models and advances in technology.
As others have said I would buy a warranty for at least 1 to 2 years and see how things are then.
That's my .01 worth

I'm in the same group that doesn't buy extended warranties but I made an exception with the motorhome. As many have said, if you're real handy you may be more comfortable in not having a warranty but I'm not all that handy. I bought a Cornerstone warranty and have used it a couple times so it has already saved me money. All repairs must be pre-approved by them but they pay directly to the approved shop.

In my opinion the only sure thing in an "extended service contract" is that the seller companies "will" look for "any" reason to deny you coverage for your rv. It is extremely important that you read the "fine" print of the contract and understand it. These folks are in the business to make money and will/do deny many many more claims than they approve. I personally, set aside X number of $$ each month for future issues/maintenance. Your money-your call but these companies are what they are.

I don't buy extended warranties either but had decided to make an exception for a motorhome (2018 vista 35f). However, in reading the fine print I see that any suspension modification will void the warranty for any suspension related failure (where does that end?). I have purchased front and rear Sumosprings and will be installing later this winter. Called this to the attention of the broker (Wholesale Warranties-good company....$3854 for 7 year 70,000 mile policy) and they confirmed that Sumosprings would cause the company to waive coverage on anything suspension related.

So....I'm out. No warranty for me.

On the Ford chassis, suspension issues do happen but they are not common. I'd be concerned with slide issues and other RV systems that are not chassis related.

I bought a five year service contract (XtraRide from Protective) through my dealership when I purchased my motorhome. I just recently purchased a new XtraRide contract (you don't renew, you purchase again) through Eagle Vision RV (https://www.eaglevisionrv.com). Very pleased with the price. They offered a couple different service contracts and I saved quite a bit of money over what the dealership wanted to sell me a service contract for. Good luck!

Please keep in mind when you buy a RV and the dealer is trying to sell you a extended warrant (service) policy it's a huge money maker for them. Bargain with them. I've read where others have bought them for 50% less than what the dealer initially quoted

Just a thought, I have used the extended warranty Wholesale does a good job, but the key to having any warranty work done, make sure the people you are working with know how to talk to the warranty company, it makes a huge difference

Here is another thought, although it does NOT address the OPs question directly.
Why buy/pay for something that is FREE for the first year or longer anyway??? The MFG of both the coach AND the chassis have warranties for at least the first year. An extended warranty will use that to deny you coverage most likely. Let the MFG warranty pay for itself the first year THEN purchase an extended coverage product.
As ststed, the dealers make BIG MONEY off these things. Most issues are going to crop up soon anyway unless you don't use the rig.
