The state of NM does not require a special license for RV drivers as
long as they are not driving for commerce. However, if you travel quite
a bit other states are not required to accept the class D for an RV. The
state of CA would require you to have at least a class E license if you
are going to be driving in their state for a period of time.

Subject:Class E license requirement
Comments:Sirs,
I am trying to determine exactly what Class of Drivers License is
required for a Recreational Vehicle owned and driven for personal
private use that is a diesel pusher, 40 feet long with a gross vehicle
weight of 32,000 pounds. I have searched through the New Mexico Code
section 18.18 & 18.19 and can find no definitive requirement for
other than the Class D license.
There are some sections which when taken literally indicate that the
Class E license is required for vehicles over 26,001 pounds but the
section which excludes RVs for personal private use seems specifically
to override that requirement. I am left with the impression that the New
Mexico Legislature intended for there to be no additional requirement
beyond the Class D license for private use Recreational Vehicles and
Motor Homes. This would be consistent with SOP for 35 other states.
Can you provide clarification with specific references?
Thank You very much. Mark
