Cargo Box on top of Motorhome?

I am curious if anyone has built or has added a cargo box and small deck to the top of the RV? My son is convinced it’s possible and wants to put a cargo box large enough for surf boards, Skis and snowboards up there. I am sure this is not recommended for many reasons most notably poking holes into the roof but I am curious how folks have managed to create more storage utilizing the roof. We have an 02 Adventurer in great shape with low miles. We are redoing the inside looking to create more storage for larger sports related items. Thanks for reading.

What amount of height will this add to your rig and possible affect clearance where you go, under bridges or at gas stations etc?

If you secure your cargo box to whatever the roof frame rail material is whether it's wood or metal then structurally I think you'll be fine. I wouldn't be as concerned about wind resistance or how aerodynamic it is, but the sheer mass of it when turning, stopping and starting and what amount of force it has. I think a stud finder can help discern where your mount points are up there, pop a line on the roof.

If you were to spread the mounts out over several rafters and several point along each then I think it's fairly secure. As for the stainless steel self-tapping screws and Dicor etc roof sealant you're going to buy - just do a mighty job with it and seal it to high heaven.

I can see it working out.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. Height is a concern. The starting, stopping and turning is a point I had not considered but makes total sense. Thanks again for the responses.
