Vermont actually mandated this a couple years ago. For years it had been law that we were supposed to file on our income taxes any online purchases where sales tax wasn’t charged and then “correct” that when our taxes were filed. As you would suspect the number of people volunteering up more taxes was pretty small.

A couple years ago Vermont updated the law so anyone selling to a resident had to charge taxes and pay directly to the State. (There are some carve out rules for smaller companies, but for most of the one online we now have tax automatically applied at checkout). As part of that, many of us received letters from the state saying “we know you have engaged in online commerce and your returns all say $0 where you were supposed to correct for it on your taxes. You have until xxxx day to make a voluntary payment or if audited on your next return be ready to prove you either didn’t buy online or paid appropriate taxes”.

As the upside, as long as you made a payment to “catch up” there was a general level of amnisty, but it was still a hotly debated item as to the “tone” and exactly how they knew our shopping habits. (And how much they knew)

Death and taxes, only certainty in life.

Our taxes are way low compared to any other developed democracy in the world. I find it interesting that before online retailing started, nobody had a problem paying sales tax at their local retailer’s register. We all knew this change was coming. Without it, cyber sellers had an unfair competitive advantage versus brick and mortar retailers. Now it will be a more level playing field. Thanks for the heads up. I had totally forgotten the effective date.

All the U.S. tariffs on imported goods and raw materials are the most insidious taxes we pay. When Trump put the tariff on Canadian aluminum my US built boat trailer price went up $400 overnight.

We should also appreciate that companies like Verizon, Chevron, Apple, and many others actually pay no taxes.

Taxes and tax policy is a political topic and one impossible to discuss on a forum that allows zero political discussion.
