WIT GNR, we're here, man is it "GREEN"

Ladies and Gents,
Well, we're finally here at the 2014 GNR at Forest City IA. While we're a bit early due to our friends wanted to be here early so they could get their coach worked on, there's quite a few Winnies and Itasca's parked in this monstrous place. I had different impressions of what this place was going to look like.

We're parked on low, rolling mounds of grass. Some are a bit of a challenge to level on but, I've been doing off-kilter leveling for decades so, no biggie for us. But, we watched others after they were escorted to their parking place and you could tell they're clueless on what's needed to level. Winnebago is requesting you use pads for leveling jacks due to the soft ground we're sitting on. I used them both on the jacks and the tires and wheels.

One thing I got to tell all you folks. Being born and raised in the San Diego area and, living there for most of my life, and most recently moving from there to Lake Havasu City AZ, we've had that So CAL weather and, semi-green-brown terrain, (depending on what time of season) for ever. But, once we hit the western, leading edge of Nebraska, on the way here, I've never seen so much GREEN and wet country. There's little, mini Lakes all along the freeways and nothing but, either flat or rolling hills with a few zillion acres of corn growing all around you.

And, one more thing we (in the So CAL and Havasu areas) normally NEVER have to put up with is, MOSQUITOS Those things are a pain in the b.. not to mention, every other place they sink their tiny little beak into. Then, because of the green, constantly wet type of atmosphere, it's considerably more HUMID here than we're used to. But, not intolerable.

We'll get along with all of it. We've got lots planned for the next 15 days or so. Factory tours, individual tours of specialty operations, events, get togethers, and much, much more. It should be a fun time. I must say, I can't wait to get back to my "dry" climate and NO BUGS.

Buy the way, this is also the first time either me, my wife and or, our dog has ever had to put up with TICKS. We had one stuck in the dog while camping at Pawnee Lake State Campground. I got out my soldering iron to assist in making it back out of it's intrusion. Then, we were constantly on the lookout for them. Anyway, it's going to be fun.

Scott. Finally east of the Rockies??

What was your travel route and did you go through Virgin River Gorge on I-15. People coming from SLC said it was down to one lane northbound. Yes/no.

We were on the way there. But last Wednesday we broke down. Spent 9 hours waiting on the shoulder waiting for a tow. Then the place we were towed to closed at 4:00 Thursday. Broken fan pulley, broken fan clutch, broken idler pulley, and broken fan blade. We're stuck in Columbus, Ohio waiting for an inspector from extended warranty to authorize repairs.

I bet you will have a lot of fun.
We only made the GNR once in our 11 years of full timing, but we enjoyed it thoroughly and intended to attend another one but it never worked out.

Have a great time. We enjoyed GNR many times while we owned a Winny years back.

Only 50 miles left to drive before we arrive to our first GNR! Keep a spot warm for us :-)

Fire up;

Thanks for the report. We plan to be there next Wednesday and hopefully it will dry off a little. We have only attended once before and we are looking forward to the GNR experience again.

Kerry,
Well, we've been on the I-15 so many times that, I think I could go to sleep once I entered it and, the coach would drive itself all the way up to and beyond Yellowstone. So, this time we opted for a different route. And, since we started this trip from our new home in Lake Havasu City, we took 95 to I-40 through Kingman, Williams, Flagstaff and camped at Gallup NM for the first stop. Then kept on I-40 'till we hit the 25 which, comes down from CO. We headed up that way. We took that 'till we hit the 76 that runs NE to Ogallala Nebraska.

A note here folks. I don't know if any of you have been on that 76 out of Denver, on the way to Nebraska but, it's by far, one of the lousiest freeways we've been on in years. I think we drove on about 150 miles of Ka-bump-ka-bump-kubump-kubump (20' apart concrete joints) at 60 mph and it was tearing things apart in the coach. If it were up to me, I'd make the governer of that state, drive that section of the road, every day until they fixed it. Enough rant.

Yep, we've been on the Virgin River Gorge several times and, while it can be a bit hectic, in terms of big trucks competing for space at 65 mph, it's normally a pleasant drive. I just wanted a different route this time.

Unless there's a massive influx of people/rigs in the next couple of hours, there's seriously plenty of room left.

Don,
They apparently have had a ton of rain in the past while. But, it's not enough to fret over. Parking on this type of terrain simply warrants common sense. I'd have used my small lumber yard even without them requesting the use of "pads for jacks". So, unless they get another Katrina through here in the next few days, it will be fine. Good luck and be careful driving here.

3rd week in June they had 8" there. The river was almost over the road and Pammel Park was flooded when we were there. We like Forest City and the folks there. Shooterz Pizza is the favorite here. While we were waiting to get in to service we went to the Buddy Holly crash site thats about 15-20 minutes from the plant. The new area is soft!
