Sorry, I should have clarified, we never use RV TP; Dear Wife like Charmin and Charmin she gets. The macerating toilets work like gang busters and blockages are not a problem!

Any cheap unscented septic tank safe household toilet paper works fine in an RV holding tank. Store brands and generic basic single ply septic tank safe is just fine however when you get into the super duper, lotion containing, extra strong, highly perfumed, etc household brands then you are more likely to have a problem.

40 years Of Scott’s 1000 sheet 1 ply safe for septic. Never have had a clog.

In case of emergency noooo TP use Sears catalogue was good when I was a kid.

Here's the straight poop! [Couldn't resist] When in doubt about whether or not a particular toilet paper is potentially troublesome for your RV toilet, just run this simple test. Find a jar or other vessel that will hold about one quart of water, preferably with a lid, (canning jars work well), fill it about 2/3 full of cool tap water and 2 sheets of toilet paper. Fasten the top and shake the jar for a few seconds. Did the paper shred into small pieces? If yes, you're good to "go" [I'm full of 'em today]. If the paper does not break down easily, try again with another brand.

Also, try this test with facial tissue. The opposite should be true. That stuff is, or should be, designed to withstand the water test and stay in one piece through extensive shaking. This stuff should never be flushed down the toilet, RV or not, unless you have a crush on your local plumber.

I was just reading an article about the history of TP. Early sailors apparently used the frayed end of a rope and then dipped the rope in water to clean it off. Perfect solution for an RV!

Once we discovered that it takes more water in the black tank than anything else that goes in there we have had zero issues. We use what ever is on sale in the paper isle.

The TP we buy is inexpensive 2 ply TP. Not the really cheap, but nothing that looks like Charmin, which I have seen mentioned in a number of forums will not break down.

NOTE: I also put 3-6 gallons of water back in the black tank after dumping to get a layer of water on the bottom. Additionally adding a pint or so of water to the toilet bowl before going #2 helps add extra water.

Just to add: Very helpful post, thank you. We do this "test" too and never had an issue as well as we buy "normal" TP.

Charmin or other "Comfort-Toilet-Paper"-Brands are "semi-plastic" (fleece), like various paper-handkerchiefs too. You can even wash those handkerchiefs in the machine (which is an advantage if you forgot to empty your pockets) but out in nature it takes decades to biodegrade. Imagine that you want to dump the tanks after three days this is not very useful stuff.

Concerning John Wayne Bullet Proof TP: Those guys out in the Wild Wild West are used to take single-ply sandpaper...

My concern is not so much for the black tanks in our units, as using appropriate TP will solve that, but the septic systems upon which we dump into. Sure, it might pass YOUR black water tank, but will it clog the resort’s septic leach fields?

If it passes the RV test, it's definitely okay for large septic systems. As for the leaching field, only waste water makes it that far in a properly operating septic system. The tank's function is to separate the solid waste, including the TP, from the liquid where bacteria and enzymes, over time, break down the solid waste. This is why it is important to have the tank pumped out periodically based on how much solid waste accumulates in the tank. Therefore it is very important to know how much solid waste collected in the tank since it was last pumped. Then you would know how long you can wait for the next cleanout.

As for the facilities that receive our waste tank drainage, I'm sure they get a lot worse than extra strength Charmin in their tanks and have them pumped out frequently. Talk to anyone who works in a wastewater treatment facility about the "stuff" that ends up there. It all has to do with proper usage and maintenance.

That's correct, but heavy flow can basically ruin that settling protection. Modern home systems use multiple tank chambers and a timer on pumps to prevent too much going to the drain field at one time.

Even on gravity systems though they can install a filter between the last chamber and the drainfield, sort of a last chance of for protection.

I used to use the Marathon brand from Costco because its thinner and passed the "water in the jar" test very well. Then I switched to the regular Kirkland brand, softer and it dissolves really well in a jar of water so thats my brand now for home or rv.
