The hose I’m referring to is the 12 ft QD hose to connect to on board lp QD outlet. The 22 doesn’t come with that does it? Mine just came with the lp tank hose and regulator.

Right you are Wayne M. I plan to cook some ground beef burger patties. That's hard to screw up.

Has anyone bought Grass Feed Black Angus steaks and thought they tasted odd?

I still want to now more about this oily residue in LP and how or if this stuff is why Coleman does not recommend using their grills with LP from an RV tank. (I think this is the case.) But is this because of the oily residue or is it because Coleman just wants to sell their Canister LP cans at a higher profit?

No, the 22 does not come with a 12ft hose. I'm also thinking of purchasing an adjustable regulator. I'd like to be able to get down to a lower temperature for pancakes and crepes. I did do a breakfast on the 22 that included pancakes and they came out good..just want some lower heat if it is possible.

I have a Coleman grill that I carried for several years and I used it from my on-board 27 gal propane tank. I never noticed any weird tastes or oil. Can't explain that. Maybe my taste buds are shot from all the spices I like.

p.s., you can buy an adapter that will "bleed" fill one of those canisters. Saves a few bucks. I have not tried it yet but it is on my to-do-list to try.

Also, using a 36" Blackstone Griddle will deplete a 20# propane bottle in 8 hours, give or take. Don't know the life of a 20# propane bottle for a grill but suspect the smaller size will increase the time considerably. Canister's considerably less.

Happy grilling! Or griddling.

You can unknowingly buy dirty propane, and it can enter your tank(s) when you refill. Never happened to me. Some lp appliances are very sensitive to oil contamination, such as refrigerators. I know Mr. Buddy recommends using an oil filter with their heaters if not using a Coleman 1lb bottle. This article has info I didn’t know about propane:

Good article. Glad I have a residential refrigerator.

Because it will be raining where I am RV camping for the next 3 days, I will not be able to BBQ some burgers and marinated pork tenderloin for a while.

When I do grill some more food, then I will see if I still taste something LP-like after cooking?

Thanks for that article above by the way. It confirms oil can get in the LP system, but it really does not say how other than during the refueling process -- as if the station pump system or delivery truck is to blame -- and not the LP compound mixture in the tank.

I also have googled this subject and when people complain about LP taste in their food, the replies I have read refute this; and the people complaining never seem to circle back and explain if they ever solved the problem or how they solved the problem.

Then I found articles about "oil in the LP tank," which included information like the article above. And these stories always talked about the oil clogging up the regulator or jets; and the net affect was poor heat or poor combustion and some suggest a larger then normal yellow flame will all contribute to a bad burn, but they don't imply a bad taste in food if you use the LP for grilling, but maybe that is because they just didn't cover this subject.

What I did learn is that there is more energy per pound in LP (propane) gas tank vs. natural gas you get from the city. And consequently, the LP bbq grill jets will have smaller orifices vs. a natural gas bbq grill.

But I'm concerned with taste. So maybe this long story boils to to what contaminates were on the grill before I grilled the steak; and maybe that dirty wire brush I used to clean the grill was the source of these contaminates? IDK.

Has anyone used one of those bbq cleaners that are biodegradable on the inside of their gas grill and on the cast iron grates to clean it... and had no taste issues afterwards?

I have watched YouTube video on cleaning gas grills and no one has used cleaners of any kind inside.

Anyway, the key to figuring out this problem lies is grilling more food. So thanks for your feedback until I have time to do that.

Tongue in cheek ! (Griddle, no taste. :-))

I have used cleaners in the past on grates for a grill. Rinsed them well. Never had an after taste.

Many "grillers" don't even clean their grates. just run them on high heat after cooking and burn the residue. I've done that but much easier to clean when it is burnt.

When I started using an onion to lubricate the grates they were a lot easier to clean.

So I have concluded that my LP RV Tank was not to blame for my horrible tasting steak the other day.

Rather, I think I contaminated my new grill buy using a wire brush I previously used to clean a rusty-painted sheet metal piece months before.

Today I cleaned the grill with just clean water. Then I used a new wire brush and vegetable cooking oil on the cast iron grate. And I cooked a few burgers that had no petroleum taste. So that is good.

Of course, I would now need to buy some more "Grass Feed" Black Angus Rib Eye steaks from Walmart (again) and put them on the Barbie to see if this second attempt is any different, but odds are contamination was the greater cause.

=== New Subject ===

I definitely like my Coleman "Excursion" Model #9406, which is the same a Coleman's "Roadtrip" grill... only the Excursion model has a solid center plate that keeps the flames from burning (stuff) in your meat. So this is why I am a fan.

And I think if buy this grill and only use those green screw on LP canistors, you too will love your grill.

However, if you attempt to run your Coleman Grill off your LP Tank, then you really need to read this thread first, because it may not be as straight forward as you think, because this Coleman with a 15-PSI regulator requires you to plumb your remote gas line off the HIGH PRESSURE side of your LP tanks, which is BEFORE your LP tank regulator. Be very careful with the wire brush. It has been known that a wire or two will find its way into an item being cooked.

Do a search on "wire grill brush in food" without the quotes.

I always washed my in the sink with scrub brushes and had not problem getting the food particles off after a good rinse.

Just be careful, please.

Wow! This thread went dead. Well here it is revitalized.

July 1st we started our summer "get out of the heat" trip. It didn't work. Hot everywhere. I did use the 22" BS on the trip and enjoyed cooking on it. We were in Shipshewana, IN and 10 more rigs of RV Mutants showed up. The day they rolled in, we had already been there for days, I fixed smash burgers for everyone, knowing how exhausting it is after a long days ride. Several members came over to look at the BS, and of course my expert cooking.

Got back home October 6th..shoulder surgery a few days later. Should have had it done before we left for the summer but I did not want physical therapy to interfere with our plans.

Cooked a few meals on the 36" on the patio but the best one was Philly Cheese Steak Crepes, and sweet crepes. Easy peasy.

What has everyone else been up to with their GRIDDLE?

Bought the Blackstone

I already have a Weber Q1200 but I mentioned on another thread that I may try out the Blackstone if given an opportunity.

https://www.winnieowners.com/forums/...ml#post3895264

About a month ago, I was in the Destin Wal-Mart and they had 22" Adventurer's on clearance for $117! Great deal and couldn't pass it up so I lugged it back to the campsite. When I said lugged, I mean it's heavy. Probably 50+ lbs. Unboxed and seasoned it using almost an entire canister (I bought 4 for $18).

The following is my honest review and comparison.

Over the course of a month, I've grilled everything from chicken to steaks to vegetables and bacon to get a good feel for what it can do (or not).

Pros:
  • Easy to prepare larger portions. Best way to cook breakfast. Cooking an entire lb. of bacon at a time with fried potatoes is awesome.
  • Breeze to cook grilled veggies, especially mushrooms and onions to put on your burgers... yum!

Cons:
  • Drinks propane like water. Exhausted 4 bottles in a week. Running out while preparing a meal sucks, not to mention the expense!
  • As I mentioned, it's big and heavy. For those who are on the borderline for weight/space beware.
  • No cover to be able to slow cook a whole chicken or a pork tenderloin. Inefficient for cooking up a few hot dogs. The Weber is perfect for this.
  • Cleaning is kind of a pain. The open flame on the Weber gets the residue crusty and easy to brush off

I realize that need to get a 5# bottle or preferably setup a PPG line from the rig. Unfortunately, you cannot find these parts on the road.

In summary, IMO both grills have their merits. Overall, I prefer the Weber for versatility.

RockNRoll, Thanks for the good review. Yep, there are limitations with just about everything. I'm surprised that you find clean-up more difficult on the BS. Scrape, water, scrape, wipe down, season takes less than 2 minutes and none of the parts need to go into the RV to be cleaned. Well, the scraper, spatulas, and tongs.

Spatchcock the chicken and medallion the pork tenderloin. Works great. I just did pork tenderloin on the 36" last night. Absolutely delicious and seared very well.

My 22" is the adventure, and it came with the lid, stand, and propane bottle hose. You are correct on the green bottles running out fast, considering that it is only 1 pound of propane. Not wanting to carry a 20 lb bottle I used the little green ones until I got to our month long stay, Then I bought a 20 pound for $49 and used it until we left, donated it to the RV Park. My daily cost was $1.63. I just deducted it from what I was going to loose at the casinos.

Parts for setting up the lines can be found at Lowe's. Also Amazon has the flare connectors for the BS.

Here is how I set up the storage in the MH:

2 x 12's on each end measured for clearance. 1/2" plywood spanning the two. No screws or bolts, just free standing.

The BS definitely has a place in my arsenal. Thanks for the advice, but personally, I prefer to keep the meats whole and slow cook/smoke (Ribs anyone?)

Unlike Wayne’s beast MH, The MM can only carry so much. Only room for one bbq in the pass thru. Adventure 17 w/ side burner slips easily into pass thru using an old piece of carpet underneath to make it slide. So versatile, we cook nearly every meal on it, and cook a pot of beans or corn or pot of coffee at the same time. I’d challenge any open flame bbq’er to cook a steak as tasty as mine on the BS. While he’s still cleaning his grill, I’m done and enjoying some single malt.

Don't forget the simple and relatively inexpensive Weber Go-Anywhere Gas Grill. I've used one for years. It's light and does a great job although it may be a little small for a large family/group. Throttled down it will even do a great job on a tri-tip or other larger piece of meat. I don't use the 1 lb bottles but use a 5 lb propane tank. I have an Extend-a-Stay that I haven't installed yet but, once it's installed I can run it off my MH's tank. I have a separate griddle that I can use on either on it or camp stove.

Here's a link to a review:

Since I packed the RV away for the winter the Blackstone has been moved up onto the deck - This morning it was bacon, fried potatoes, basted eggs, homemade bread toast and cheese. This evening we'll sear a couple steaks. The grille has gone out behind the garage! I bought the 22" for traveling but we use it year round now, perfect size for 2.

Absolutely there is a requirement for a smoker, but not everything needs to be smoked. But, if I do need to infuse a little smoke in my griddle cooking, I get one of those throw away aluminum pans, put some hickory (or what ever flavor of the day is), put the blow torch to it, set it on the griddle and close the lid. Might not get that deep ring but it does infuse some of the smoke flavor into the cooking.

In one of my pics, I show the weber with a griddle plate that I use for searing. Although small, it's just fine for 1 or 2 people. I love baby back ribs and there is no better way to smoke/glaze them than with the Weber in combination with the mini InstaPot Ultra.

Right now, I'm storing the 22" during travel in front of the kitchen sink (keeping above the axle) on end and is not very convenient. In addition, since I use a wok for stir frying, I'm thinking the 17" with the side burner would have been preferable. Looks like Wal-Mart has it on sale right now.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Blackston...-Top/718980071

The 22" was an impulse buy but will probably still use it at home when family visits. Seems like everything has its place depending on the number of people and/or the type of food you enjoy.
