Water heater problem

My hot water heater does not start always on the first try and sometimes there is a loud bang when it starts. It’s a 2001 35 u, any help would be great.

Could be lots of things. They are pretty simple devices. It could be as simple as some debris (wasp nest, etc) in the igniter tube, or worn out parts in a 18 year old water heater. You’ll simply have to open it up and check things out or take it to an authorized repair facility. But, as with any gas device a bang is a very bad sign and it should be taken seriously and without delay.
