A/C question(s) 1999 Winnie 31C

1999 Winnie 31C w/Ford chassis. Our AC basically iced up to the point of not kicking out cold air last time we used it. I'm pretty sure it's the Coleman 6799-806. Does this mean it needs the refrigerant re-charged? Or what?

I don’t know why the unit is freezing up on your RV. But, generally there is no option to add refrigerant to rooftop A/C units. They do not come with fill valves. Rarely you’ll find one that someone has had such a valve braised in.

Well . . . that settles that! My son said he thought we had it on too high. Had it maxed on dials and it iced up.

Not so fast, there are other reasons A/C units can ice up. One of the main ones is when the return air mixes too much with the new cold air. This happens in the ceiling portion of the A/C.

I lived in Tifton from 1963-1967. You'll definitely want some A/C, though back then not much was air conditioned - not even the high school.

Sometimes running the fan on anything but high will cause icing. It should have a freeze sensor on the evaporator coil that shuts the unit off when icing occurs.
As creativepart said, make sure the plenum is sealed so chilled and return air cannot mix. I used aluminum duct tape.

most of the time an evaporator coils freezes up do to low airflow, which gets lower and lower as the ice accumulates. Sometime a low refrigerant charge can do it but is is usually airflow.

. Yep. Clogged intake air filter will cause freeze up ...
