Tank in water heater leaking. Got a new one coming. Existing Atwood had check valves on both water lines. Are they needed What is the purpose of the one on the hot waterline

This is just a guess. Double safety. You don't want hot water getting into the cold. Also may have something to do with winterizing. All pure guess work form me.

I just put "water heater check valve" into the Google search box at the top of this page. I was amazed at the number of hits I got. Apparently they can be a real trouble spot and there are a lot of suggestions for cleaning, etc.

Something else to "file" away in my brain.
