Vacuum Breaker

On my last camping trip, when a person was showering, I found water under the shower wall that separates the shower and bedroom. It was also seen under the refrigerator. The diagnosis by the rv technician was a defective vacuum breaker located behind the toilet. Is this possible? What is the purpose of the vacuum breaker? I also found the outside shower was leaking at its hose connection that has a breaker. Any information on how it works, why I saw water and the purpose for the vacuum breaker would be appreciated.
Thanks
