Fresh water pumps

Do they all pulse, or am I doing something wrong?

ours pulses depending on the demand. For example, if the faucet we are using isn't on all the way (valve not fully opened), our pump will pulse. If we have the faucet open fully, the pump will hum along at a constant rate. We assumed this is normal and has done this since new.

When all the faucets are off and it pulses it indicates a leak. Either you have a fitting/line drip, a faucet drip or the check valve at the pump is leaking back to the tank.

Or the ice maker just refilled the tray.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood. So you're talking about hearing the water pump "pulsing" when no faucets are on.

No, if you can hear regular pulsing when nothing is running and you have the pump switch on, then something is wrong. As has been said, there's probably a big leak somewhere if you hear the pump actually pulsing. If our ice maker is filling (however, we usually will not let the ice maker use tank water as we don't drink from the tank) or if we haven't cleared the water heater valve drip, we might hear a short hum or two from the pump but not a pulse. If you're hearing a continual or even intermittent pulsing sound from the pump, then we think something bigger is happening where you are losing water somewhere because of a leak.

With that said, we mostly will turn the pump switch off until we need to use water for something (when not connected to city water) so we usually don't witness any sound coming from the pump.

If it pulses with the valve wide open then the pressure switch (see manual) needs to be 'tweaked'. Ours was pulsing so I just turned on a valve wide open and 'tuned it' like a B&S lawnmower carb!

I read the OP's question as asking if all water pumps produce a "pulsing" flow of water when in use.

I think the answer to that, is that many do although apparently some can be adjusted to minimize or eliminate it. Some of the new aftermarket units claim they don't I believe.

We added an accumulator tank to eliminate the pulsing and minimize the pump cycling.

Best of luck.

Rick

Assuming that your water system doesn't have leaks, the pulsing is normal. You can minimize the pulsing by adding an accumulator to the system, or install a variable speed pump which will eliminate the pulsing all together.

I was referring to it pulsing with the water faucet turned on. I'll have to check if it pulses at full throttle or only when the faucet is partially opened. Sorry for the confusion.

I can tell you of at least 10 problems that occured From leaving the pump ON... we allways turn it off, When we are going to be away from the coach, Every evening IT is turned OFF;; Now your best investment is a pressure tank , Most of them are quite cheap and a snap to install.. We have the 1 gallon draw down. IT is sufficent for most everything ,, Remember a Navy shower;; With a wash cloth You wash up as far as possable and down as far as possable ; then you wash possable ;rince and do it again 1 QT; of water;;;; Life is good;

I had the water pump pulsing when using the kitchen sink with the faucet wide open. Found the problem to be the aireator screen was partly clogged. Cleaned the screen and pulsing stopped. This problem was on a 2007 Jayco 31 ft Greyhawk that Ive traded in.

The Shureflow pump we have has an adjustable bypass built in. You can adjust it so the it will run smoothly at low flow. The bypass valve allows the water on the pressure side to return to the suction side.
