Anode Rod Replacement
We have a 2019 Sunstar 29VE. It has a Suburban water heater. This is the first time I am replacing the anode rod, so I want people smarter than me to make sure I order the correct replacement. I verified that the current anode rod needs replacement. Should I just get one from Suburban directly? I believe the magnesium rod is better than the aluminum one?
Thanks for your help!

Anode rod
When I replaced one on a fifth wheel I ordered mine on Amazon. They have a good selection. Travato John

Hi Marudnick,
I am surprised that those would ever be made from Aluminum. I definitely would get the Magnesium anode, as that is an essential element required in our diets, and Aluminum is not.
Is there a big difference in cost?
Thanks, Eagle5

Magnesium rods are for softer water, aluminum for hard water and higher pH.

You can always get a new hot water heater if the Magnesium Rod doesn't protect your tank adequately, but if you use an Aluminum Rod (Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's) then you might have to get a new ... oh I forget now ... Never mind.

When dealing with a pretty small item like an anode, I tend to like to get closer to the folks who deal with this question more often, even if it costs a couple dollars more than Amazon???
I like dealing with foliks like E'trailer or others which are all over the place online that sell parts for RV. They often have really good prices as well as really good ideas of what works best.
A call with the brand and model number will help them get the right one the first time?\

Thanks for all your comments. I think I’ll just go with the OEM, Suburban. It’s less than $20 on their web site. It looks like magnesium is preferable, so I will choose that one.

Hi DRMW001,
The Sunstar 29VE is a cool motorhome! After I bought a replacement anode, I also purchased a flushing wand.

That wand work well. First time I replaced the sacrificial anode, I unscrewed it while under pressure. That was a blast of cold water, thank GOD for that at least, then I spent 10 minutes dousing with a hose. The wand works much better…

As 09 harley says, the old anode can look rather rotten and still work fine. For anodes, magnesium gives the greatest protection, zinc a bit less, and aluminum considerably less protection.

Eagle, the wands work well for cleaning out the WH. Just be careful. The wand can blow off and go into the water heater. This happened to me. Ended up pulling pres. release valve and filling WH from the drain plug till full then putting wet/dry vac on the pres release hole and sucking the wand out. It floats thank goodness. Fishing it out did not work. Be sure and read the negative reviews on Amazon....this happens often.

Hi Fletcher0077,
Thank you for the heads-up on that. Mine looks pretty solid, and my house water pressure isn't too high, so I think I'll be OK. I also have special fetching tools which would make removal of a broken applicator wand a cake walk, but I will do my best to prevent it from happening.
Thanks, Eagle5
