Set-up sequence?

Fellow Winnebagoists, Journey'rs in particular;

Proper sequence for camp site setup?

I've been doing it thusly;
  • Stop coach on desired patch of desert
  • Allison in neutral
  • Park brake ON
  • Jacks power on, coach lowers itself
  • Jacks extend; level coach
  • Extend slides (first check if kids left anything like say, an air rifle on top of slide...)
  • Shut down engine
  • Awnings as desired
  • Open cool frosty adult beverage(s)
Procedure correct?

Hello Ed,
I think you can shut the engine down after the parking brake is applied. I'm new to this also but If I remember I don't leave the engine running while I level the MH.

Ed,

I believe you have it nailed. As to the question of engine running or not while deploying the jacks and slides, I have been told (never heard it directly myself) that HWH folks advise (during rally seminars) that running the big engine is preferrable while using the hydraulic pump. It ensures maximum voltage to the pump motor and longer motor life. Whenever I can, I leave the motor running.

PUT the Adult beverage away!! Your not done!!!

You still need to hook up the WATER, ELECTRICAL and SEWER

NOW you can have that beverage

I think Winnie recommends leaving the engine running but I usually shut it down after the brake is set out of consideration for those around us. It hits the batteries pretty good but when on shore power they bounce right back.

BTW... the adult beverage comes out as soon as the key it turned off!

The only things I do different are:
After stopping on that patch of desert i;
  • get out and do a walk around to make sure of the clearances.
then
After awnings if desired, I also break out the frosty but then;
  • Complete hook up of E/W/S and cable tv if present.
  • Hook up portable satellite antenna in the absence of cable or batwing tv
  • I sit in the cool (or warm) coach and set up the television, sipping and sometimes guzzling. Setting up tv is DW must.

OK, good stuff.
Hookups? What are those? We camp pretty much only in the open desert or at race tracks. I think we've only been in a place with hookups once or twice since 1999. Only TV we watch are DVD's we bring with us, but most trips the TV isn't on at all. Too busy exploring, riding, reading, campfiring.

Some Allisons don't have park. Just the air brake park.

The HWH leveling system manual for my coach ('99 UF) says, "Place the transmission in the recommended position for parking and set the parking brake. Turn the coach engine off. Turn the ignition to the "ACCESSORY" position. Note: Running the vehicle engine during leveling can cause erratic operation and inhibit proper leveling of the vehicle."
Don't know why unless the vibration caused by the engine may confuse the level sensors.

Oh! I remember now. In my youth, that is what I did. Things have changed considerably since 1974.

In regards to BSIMONDS post, it is best to read each manual for each model MH and use the manufacturer's recommended procedure. My manual states to leave the engine running for a 2008 Winnebago Destination (DP) on a Freightliner XC chassis.

I also do it against the recommendation of leaving the engine running. After setting the brake and shutting the engine off, I plug into shore power before leveling and putting the slides out. I remember asking the tech at the dealership about that and he told me "nope, the engine doesn't need to be running if you're plugged in to level and put the slides out" so I haven't ever since. Right or wrong?

If boondocking, I will let the engine idle, however.

Leaving the engine on when leveling takes a big strain off the batteries and dumps it on the alternator. That's somewhere around a 50A load when running.

Ditto on the hookups. Probably done it 3 times and I feel like a novice each time cuz we never do it either

I spent a few years at 29 Stumps. I've slept on the sand, and it can get real cold at 2 a.m.

I also lived in a tent for 6 months and another 6 months in a "bunker." I wonder why I like all the conveniences of life.

I'll look for a manual. it would help if I knew the year and model number, or did I miss that in the thread?
