RV GPS

Hi all could you help please.
Does anyone use their dash factory GPS?
Ours is useless. Hard to see. Very difficult to add address.
Is there a way to change the program to Rand McNally or Garmin?

Do we use it - no...
an it be changed - Yes,
buy a Garmin rv760LMT and use the old nav screen for your backup camera only

that LMT stands for Lifetime Maps and Traffic - i.e. free !

I will never buy nav in another vehicle again - outdated programming and maps before you use it the first time and expensive to update

Simple answer, NO!

Here's what we use. You will see pros and cons on all of them.

We have been using Rand McNally RV GBS software loaded on our iPad.
Love it but the are not supporting any longer. The want you to use their tablet.
I am used to the big screen.

Same here. The included system is out of date and not easy to use.

We use an Android tablet with the CoPilot app. No cellular connection required as the maps are kept on the tablet.

We use the built in XITE Infotainment system which has the Rand McNally GPS. Maps are updated online with the SD card. Updates are done often, sometimes weekly. Often I will see a news item about a major road closure and within days receive an update.

We also use CoPilot on our IPad. The maps are on the IPad so no data is used as you navigate (GPS does not use data). Just be sure to set your parameters for RV and preferences.

No two units or route planners every seem to agree on routes but certainly make it a lot easier.

X2 for Infotainment Rand McNally. Had to get new bigger SD chip this spring, even though 2+ y.o. it was provided at no charge. Easy to update, just swap SD into laptop and back. Newer units have wi-fil so no swapping needed. I find the R.M. mostly accurate. I will set up course and way points prior to departure and go. I have not had to deviate from its' course yet. If going to a new destination, will review trip on tablet using Google Maps. I find Sat view nice to view stops and destination entrance. I will usually have the tablet handy for traffic and backup.

I use mine every trip. Putting in addresses sometimes it won't recognize, so I use gps coordinates. Sharon likes to see what the park looks like beforehand, so easy to get.

Sharon will check out the route periodically on her Verison google maps.

I do wish the screen was brighter. I have it tilted up as much as it allows, which makes it a little easier to see.

But then again, other than Sharon's smartphone, this is my first ever gps unit.

Yes , but you have to replace the entire unit, I have a 2011 Ellipse and could not get upgrades on the Xlite system. I call the company that made the old unit and they supply the same unit with the Rand McNally GPS system with lifetime maps. perfect fit in the dash and the system works great.

Howdy!

We fulltime and I've been using Co-Pilot for years first on my android tablet and now on my iPad Pro. Recently upgraded to the Co-Pilot RV app. I much prefer using my large screen tablet to A stand alone GPS. I also use the app on my smartphone when traveling in our Smart Car.

X3 on the XITE infotainment system. The Rand-McNally took some getting used to - I was/am a Garmin user (have one in the Toad). Had the same issue with the SD card being too small for a Rand Update. XITE to their credit upgraded me without any issue.

I still like the presentation on the Garmin, but we use the Rand all the time and it knows about weight/height limitation. There have been some issues with Dock (used to update the Rand) but it is currently all working.

So they have one with WiFi? I wish you hadn't told me that. I'm probably going to have to spend some money and upgrade it

Could you please explain how to update the GPS map for the dash system? Or provide a link on how to. Using the SD card.

You install the Rand McNally Dock application. You can find it here Rand McNally Support Dock Software. Once you have it installed you remove the SD card and attach to your computer. (Make sure the SD card write protect switch in not in protect mode.) Then you update your SD card. If you have a 4 gig card you will need to get a 8 gig card. Mine was provided at no charge just had to return the 4 gig card.

Thanks Ron. After this do I insert the SD in the RV slot? How do I activate the update process? Or do I run the GPS off the sd card?
Sorry but not tech savvy.

If I might jump in here, the GPS does always run from the SD card. All of the software, preferences, and routes are on the SD card. Once you have the Dock software installed you can go online with Rand at anytime to check for updates. You don't have to have the SD card plugged into your computer to check, just to download an update. Check often, updates are often. If you use Goodsam's Trip planner or Rand's trip planner you can download your trip directly to the SD card also. Once you download the trip and plug it into the nav unit it will import the trip. You can do this with RV Trip Wizard also, but it does involve copying a file to the SD card yourself.

If your unit starts doing strange things after it is on for a while it may be overheating. I added a small fan blowing on mine to resolve this.

Hope this helps.

We just did the upgrade to the system. Some of the models can run either Naviextra or Rand McNally. I called Riverpark in Elkhart, they confirmed my unit can use both. I bought the new SD card and it was simple switch over on the dash unit. Then inserted the SD card to install the software on my laptop and updated the mapping. Works great so far, better than original mapping. It was $225, but includes lifetime updates. Not bad.

I like our Garmin RV760LMT - which includes lifetime map updates and traffic, and it allows configuration of the RV/camper height, width, length and weight, in order to avoid routes with specific size or weight restrictions.

It also has an optional wireless backup camera which works better than the one in my Forza 34T, and the "sightlines" in the displayed image can be adjusted from the GPS, which is pretty cool.

Like all GPSs, it does do some strange routing at times, but that's entirely due to the occasional poor or garbage map data that will always happen.

It also interacts with the Mobile App to allow simple Google type searches on phone and then sends the destination addresses to the unit via Bluetooth.

Very happy with it. The giant 7" screen is also very legible.
