Rear TV interferance

Maybe someone here has had the same situation...

I just added Direct TV to our 05 Journey 36. After some intial isues caused by the wires at the AV switch unit connected incorrectly (apparently by the factory)everything works fine. With two exeptions:

1) The factory installed remote extender works with everything except the Direct TV unit. I have tried to locate the little sending unit in different postions in front of the satelite receiver with no luck. I have now bought a Trek remote extender and it works fine. Just courious...

2) And more importent...The rear TV on satelite only, (not off the air, or on DVD) has bad interferance. It is related to the amount of electric consumers operated. Last night with everything except the TV off the picture was perfect. As we add AC, celing fan, etc it gets worst. But no specific item seems to be the culprit. Everying has to be off for a little while and the picture settles in. The front TV and the radio is perfect. All voltages look normal, the charger is in the "float" mode and the house battery voltage is at about 12.6.
Any ideas???

Any ideas??? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>How it the TV connected to the sat receiver? Coax or S-Video/or RCA-type video connector?

If you are connected via coax, you might have "leakage" with the cable. In other words, the coax connector/wire could be loose enough to permit interference in (and the signal out for that matter.)

Try a direct video connection - you will have a much better picture (assuming you aren't doing that already.) Or at the very least, try a new coax wih SCREW connectors and tighten them a little past finger tight with pliers (key word - just a LITTLE.)

Everything in this coach is connected via coax since the AV switch/distribution unit has all coax connections.
I suppose my next step is to pull out the rear TV and check the connections since I have checked everything in the front already.

Has anyone here converted the whole set-up to a regular home theater system? I dont really like the way it uses the car radio amp nor do I like the sound from the rear TV.

Hi Wolf S,
In the vane of a loose connection, if the noise problem increases as loads are added, I would suspect a ˜less' than tight connection somewhere in the 120 VAC power. Since every load has an effect, try running on generator and if that cures the problem, check the connections from the transfer switch back through the power pole to the source. ! Be Careful ! If the generator doesn't fix the noise, start checking from the transfer switch to the interior power panel all the way through to the outlet for the TV then from the transfer switch to the satellite receiver. Don't forget that Winnie routes power through outlets daisy chain fashion. If you don't have the wiring diagrams, they are available on Winnebago's web site (see third post from the top of this forum). Tighten all connection, hot, neutral, and ground. When noise is load dependent it's usually a loose hot or neutral connection. By loose, I don't mean you can pull the wire out by hand, it just has to have a few milli-ohms resistance to generate RF white noise. Again, ! Be Careful !

I removed the rear TV, and sure enough one of the coax cables at the spliter behind the TV was barley screwed in. Tightend everything gently with pliers, and voila: perfect picture.

Tom, thanks pointing the 06 improvement out. I must not be the only one that tought the system was marginal. Has anyone done his own upgrade to a residential style home theater?
Also, the rear TV (RCA) has no A/V out connection in the rear. If I want to run the sound thru a small stereo system can I use the earphone output?

Hi Ho Wolf: Glad you found your problem. Our TV in the back is so small that I don't really strive for any quality there. (I believe 13 or 14 inch). We have a 2000 35U. We just use the remodulated channel 3 as in the original equipment. The front set is another subject. I couldn't believe that even with the "delux" A/V system things were as cheap as the original OEM equipment. It is a relatively simple matter to replace the TV with a good monitor and switch to S-video, add a good receiver for 5.1 sound, change speakers etc. Our front TV looks and sounds just like a good home system with DVD or satellite. I'm glad WI finally realized that a couple of hundred dollars saving is really not worth it when a good system makes so much difference. Oh, we had to add an inverter to power the new system.

Good for you Wolf!

You should be able to use the front earphone outlet to drive a small amplifer. If it overdrives the amp, it might need to be padded down like Gary (smlranger) did on his TV swap-out.

I am envious of Dirk's upgrade to 5.1 Dolby. The only reason I haven't jumped on that wagon is the difficulity of wiring the rear speakers - those would be on a slide. I haven't checked into running wires into the flexible/articulating wiring harness.

Would one not be ahead by changing things out but leaving the current speakers, or at least the speaker wiring in place? At least you would have S Video and a more flexible set up as to out puts and inputs.
Or am I on the wrong track here?

Again, thanks for the help. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>As you might guess, I am a technology nut and when I discovered that the QSurround has zero relationship with 5.1 Dolby I was very disappointed. I did think about using existing speakers for 5.1 retrofit. Problem is they all home in on the QSurround amp and I would need to install the new amp on the right-hand living room slide. Any way I turn, there is the "wiring on the slide" issue. I have not abandoned the 5.1 changeout project; it is just on the back burner until I have more of an appreciation about slide wiring.
