Rattling Sound Coming from Right Rear Tire Area

We recently purchased our first MH (2003 Itasca Sunova) and as my husband and I were taking it back to storage, I drove next to him with my window down and noticed a rattling noise at the rear wheel. It almost sounded like something was loose (like a loose hubcap on a car would sound) and it got louder the faster he went. After stopping we inspected the the tire area and it looks like one of the lines is wearing. Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks!

What line are you referring to? An air fill line? Don't know what wheels are on your MH but most have a large metal center cap that covers the center hub, there could be something inside of it rattling around.

Kaylinsgigi;

I had that noise once. I had full wheel covers. I removed the wheel cover and found a stone which was rattling around in the cover. If you have wheel covers check that first.

Good Luck;
Don

I will (ok, I will ask my husband to) remove the cap and see if anything falls out. Will keep you posted.

Thanks for the help!

If you have wheel liners they might need to be tightened.

Well, I'll tell you what I found when mine was making a similar noise. The angle metal which the mud flap is fastened on was broken and making noise from the vibration. It took a long while for me to find the problem. Re kept telling me and trying to describe it to me since she could hear it as she walked to the bathroom or bedroom while the motor home was in motion.
I was glad to find the source of noise and it was a pretty easy fix.

My two cents worth...YA got to look carefully around your "stuff". My rattle turned out to be a rear dually "metal" factory mud flap. It was loose and only had like 1/2 of the factory screws holding it on to the MH. It was making a racket, more speed more noise. Once it was tightened and all the screws back in...no noise. Ya!

Now sometimes the "thing" inside the hub cap will get quieter with speed...as speed is added the "thing" will become "stuck" by the spinning force to the inside of the hub cap.

Here is another possibility. It happened to me. Check the wheel balance weights. I had one that was loose and basically held on by the wheel cover. It was able to slide back and forth on the wheel and as the wheel turned it made noise against the wheel cover.

Thank you! I am not sure it has mud flaps, but if it is an easy fix, I certainly hope so... sending hubby down to check.

Thanks again!

Seems like the faster he goes, the louder it gets... weird!

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot... what are wheel liners?

Wheel liners are wheel covers made to fit or hug the wheel and look like a chrome wheel. They look much better than hub caps. They are held onto the wheel and in place by the lug nuts.

My rattle sounded just like you described.....it was the metal plate that holds the mud flap just behind the right dual. A tie-wrap from the flopping metal plate to the angled bracket fixed it once and for all.

My rattle would come and go with side winds coming from different angles and when I would be passing trucks.

Good luck,
Bill
