My '89 Chieftain's battery compartment holds the start battery, the two house batteries, and both battery solenoids. It is open to the elements and gets mud and water from the front tire throwing back into it. Anyone have this same problem? If so, how, or did you remedy it?...

Is the mud flap that hangs behind the front tire badly deteriorated or missing?
Having the battery compartment open is standard Winnebago design as the batteries can vent hydrogen gas which can become explosive if it can't dissapate into the open air.
Can't help you on your specific RV - batteries on mine are under the entry steps behind the front wheel and while they get some dust accumulation mud / water getting up to the sides and tops of the batteries has never been an issue.
